@tron yes, and in essence all it needs is to be a more convenient version if @tails_live / @tails / #Tails with like @nextcloud / #Nextcloud integration for seamless sync (with like an encrypted /home for caching and convenience...

Maybe add #Dayon as convenient #RemoteDesktop solution and a basic #AutoUpdater (& Terminal) to it.

Seriously, if I was #LinusSebastian of #LinusTechTips I'd literally choose to #donate the cost of a #TeamViewer #subscription to #FLOSS #RemoteDesktop projects like #Dayon instead and sue TeamViewer into upholding their contract or a full refund with interest as if it was a loan because clearly they chose violate that contract on their own terms and initiative!

And yes, Dayon! is awesome and I can fully recommend this as an alternative to TeamViewer, #AnyDesk, etc.

retgal.github.io/Dayon/

  • For any system that needs Remote Access as unattended I'd recommend to setup a #VPN or at least a Reverse-#SSH connection anyway so one can launch something like Dayon! by just sending a single command and have #RemoteDesktop access on-demand.

So yeah, TeamViewer literally shot themselves in the foot here by deciding to shaft paying customers who were able and willing to pay the absurd prices you asked for for a one-time license.

  • Also whilst TeamViewer does OFC maintain some infrastructure, most what they do is basically run a "rendrevous"-Server to allow two endpoints behind NATs to connect to each other and exchange details to make UPnP-style hole-punching work.

That's traffic in the single-digit megabytes per year and client, as there's not much between as clients pinging their server and basically boing some simple handshakes.

  • And as Linus said it's not his problem if they gotta have to keep systems up and running in perpetuity. They offered that deal and now they have to suffer through it! By paying the obligations are on to TeamViewer to make it work and continue to make it work!

Also if I'm on a #LAN why would I want to use TeamViewer and not any #VNC (or god forbid #RDP) server? THE WHOLE POINT OF USING TeamViewer, AnyDesk, etc. IS TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT NATs, FIREWALLS AND IP-ADDRESSES AND JUST GET CONNECTED FFS!!!

  • Personally I use #Remmina and Dayon, but that's because Remmina is comfortable even for SSH and can do that as well as RDP & VNC and Dayon is just the simple option I can walktrough people that need #TechSupport #remote|ly for a quick hands-on...

Definitely my recommendation because it also allows for any use-cases and doesn't nag one to "buy a license!"

  • So please someone please let #Linus know about Dayon so he can do a "TeamViewer alternatives" video...

@mshelton @freedomofpress @eff I did prepare peoples' devices for that in the past.

My suggestions:

0. Never assume you'll have any #HumanRights or #CivilRights. Always assume #TSA staff is looking for a reason to jail, deport, deny entry or shoot one on the spot.

1. Do not have data on them! #CPB will seize any storage media under threat of lethal violence! Use a #ThinClient-like device without any persistent storage. Keep anything important in your head or don't keep it at all.

2. Have someone to setup a #RemoteDesktop for you post-entry and enshure you've got a #SafeWord to indicate you're acting under duress, so they can redirect stuff to a inconspicuous system.

3. Have a #decoy system ready. CPB have full, unrestricted bulk access to all data from companies that are located, do business in or have an office within the #USA as per #CloudAct. So much so that they consider it "suspicious" if one doesn't have an #NSABook account.

4. Make shure all your devices are #clean. Get yourself new throwaway devices and don't trust them if you ever let them out of sight for a second!

5. Test your setup before you travel to the #US on a different system.

6. This applies to every single device from #SimCard to #Laptop. Assume that if authorities plug anything in them, they are irredeemably compromised!

7. Practise proper #ITsec, #InfoSec, #OpSec & #ComSec. Have proper contingencies and emergency contacts in place.

@bigTanuki @BillySmith I'm convinced @frameworkcomputer uses #GoogleForms not as a sole tool, but merely #ingress pipeline for their #support workflows, so there is like demand to design a whole workflow and architecture from the ground up to handle and process supoort queries.

Maybe someone will enhineer somethibg aroubd #Gitlab or #Girea's #issue #Ticketing system?

I am however shure something like a customer chat can be done with like #Zulip and for #RemoteDesktop-based #TechSupport there's an excellent tool called "#Dayon!" which is super easy to use for the support-requesting side, doesn't rely on centralized services being available and only needs a few settings by the supporter to get up and running...

  • If I were running my own company, I'd propably sponsor the development of Dayon to the same amount as it would cost to pay for AnyDesk instead!
