Why #Linux is Great (Despite the Challenges)

Linux gives you #freedom, #control, and #performance — even for #gaming. With tools like #Proton, #Wine, and #Lutris, thousands of #Windows games now run smoothly on Linux.

You get a #fast, #secure, and #customizable system without background bloat or forced #updates. Sure, setup can be tricky at first, and not every title works perfectly out of the box. But the learning curve pays off: you gain real control over your system and understand how it works.

The #community is active and helpful, and performance often matches or even beats Windows in some games. Once you're in, there's no going back.

Linux makes gaming smarter, cleaner, and yours.

Windows 10 will no longer receive free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after 14.10.2025.

Linux distributions have been deployed in extreme environments such as the International Space Station and nuclear powered submarines.

Before you advocate #Linux as an alternative for #Windows, it has to be fit for purpose first. This requires understanding and empathy for your (potential) users, which I am not sure a large chunk of the community is capable of.

@lea I think #PowerShell is more #cursed than any other #shell becaise #Microsoft can't be assed to have any consistency and one gets commands that look like

CamelCase.command-network.option -flag --another option +includeThis +-excludeThat :user

And it's worse than #MSDOS / cmd.exe, sh tcsh & ksh combined because it mixes up #DOS / #CPM-Style, #UNIX-style and whatever the fuck the peoole.who designed the #Refistry in #Windows felt like that particular day...

  • Makes me so fucking angry!

#Funfact: I needed less code than that to build my first bootable version of @OS1337 just by comparison!

~100 kitties in a café:meowpumpkin: (@lea)mfs will go "powershell is so easy and intuitive" and then i look up what the equivalent to chown in powershell is and the first result is this (📎1)

In my quest to move away from #Windows and #Microsoft, I bought a used Windows 10 laptop that I will use to learn what I need to know about Linux. I plan to set up the laptop to run both Windows 10 and Linux and then use it to get some hands on experience with Linux.

I have several friends and family members who have Windows 10 computers that are not upgradeable to Windows 11. I hope to get all my Windows computers converted to Linux and also help them convert their computers over to Linux in the next several months. This laptop will be my test case.

I'm a little nervous, but am looking forward to success with Linux. Wish me luck! (and I'll appreciate any tips or advice experienced Linux users have for me)

*Linux is like Ice Cream* ❤️

optoutproject.net/linux-is-lik

Like ice cream, the #Linux operating system 🐧 comes in different flavors.

Imagine you'd never tried ice cream before, wondering -- Do I go for Vanilla, Strawberry or Chocolate?

Yes, the afficionados have their own crazy flavor combinations 🍨 and are proud of them. But you don't have to do that. You can just start with #Vanilla or #Chocolate and that is fine. 🍦

Hey hey.

Yet another post about #VCFWest because the maps and layout just went up.

I’m all the way at the end of the main hall, exhibit 1/The Aero Aesthetic. Come on by on August 1-2, come get your streetpass on if you have a 3DS. Or get a 3D-printed bauble. And maybe play some games or confess your love to whoever’s sitting on one of the other machines via AIM.

#Windows (11) people, a question: Is there a way to make an app remember the last place I saved something? Example:

- Windows + Shift + S to screencap something
- Click Markup & Share to edit it in Snipping Tool
- Click Save button
- Drill down to a folder (in OneDrive)
- Save

But next time I take a screenshot and click Save, Snipping Tool defaults to a different folder. Whyyy

Is there a way to make it remember the folder I drilled down to?
