@ckrypto if@signalapp@mastodon.world wasn't complying with #CloudAct, @Mer__edith would be in jail.

Not to mention even if Signal keeps their "#OpenSource" code updated - which is doubtful, NOONE can actually #verify that it's the code you actually use - regardless if #backend / #Server or #client / #App!

  • #Signal is as secure as #ANØM, otherwise it would've been shutdown ages ago.

Also if Signal was designed for #security, it would've been #decentralized as #XMPP+#OMEMO and not demand #PII like #PhoneNumbers which oftentimes cannot be obtained anonymously in many juristictions at all!

By comparison, @delta doesn't require any PII, only an #eMail account, and @monocles isn't a #VCmoneyBurningParty but sustainable due to #subscription and they don't even require any personal details for #payment: #CashByMail and #Monero are accepted.

Again: It's Signal alone who have to evidence they are trustworthy, and all I get are "#TrustMeBro!" replies, which means they are not to be trusted.

  • Not to mention, it's just not sustainable to run a #service without #revenue, even if it's run entirely by unpaid volunteers and gets all it's #hosting and #costs donated, someone has to pay for expenses due to #abuse of a service (which is an inevitability come mass adoption)...

Whereas with #XMPP I can completely setup my own server and client, even build my own if I don't trust anyone else and pay someone to audit the code.

Whereas with XMPP & PGP/MIME #eMail I can layer @torproject / #Tor over it, make it an #OnionService and keep that thing under my bed with a literal killswitch...

"As #ProQuest exits the print book market, will we see a new era of #bigdeals for #ebooks?"
blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocial

"Commercial publishers prefer institutions to sign up to a leasing #subscription model, as they offer little in the way of perpetual rights. This means that if a #Library decides to cancel, they have no owned content to show for their expenditure."

PS: I hope #libraries steer clear of this atrocious model. It uses their real need for access against them. If they're desperate enough to buy a subscription, they're letting their desperation lead them into a trap.

Impact of Social Sciences · As ProQuest exits the print book market, will we see a new era of big deals for ebooks?ProQuest recently announced that it will be changing its business model to move away from print textbooks and monographs, solely to ebooks via a subscription-based model similar to a “Big Deal”. I used to subscribe to Apple Music and then stopped. When I subscribed again, I had lost all my hand-curated playlists that I had carefully crafted over the years.

I’m done with this subscription-based life where everything you cherish can and will be taken away from you. So I took the radical decision to own my music, like we used to when iPods were fashionable.

And you can too.

I have #Substack blocked at the DNS level, because I never, ever, ever, want to read anything on that site.

Substack's whole thing is "the #subscription network", and the only people who use it are people who have bought into #neoliberalism hook, line, and sinker.

The #influencea epidemic is already overwhelming, and trying to nickel and dime us to death with $1/mo here, $2/mo there, $5/mo over there. I'm looking at you, too, Patreon.

So, I had this idea a while ago, because I got disgusted with the NYT op ed and their editors in general, but some of the journalists were really good. Same with WP.

I know I can subscribe to an author's xitter feed or whatever, but I really would like the entire article. I'm honestly not adverse to paying for stuff, but I'm simply fed-up with what is clearly a billionaire owned media industry.

So, imagine if you could go to a website and select from a list of journalists. Just them. Their own titles, their own unedited articles. And Pay for that as one chunk.

I'd pay $20/month if I could get a set of articles from "today" that only was authors that I actually respect, and aren't "owned" by any billionaire.

I wish we could turn it on its head and be like, "this journalist is making a living already, and has X followers. If you want *the same* artcles for reprint in your paper, you can get a reprint subscription from them, rather than owning them.

You know, I might start paying attention to #MLS this year. But I don’t want to have to pay extra on top of my #AppleTV+ #subscription. Guess I’ll resort to streaming. Like I do for every other sport. It sucks that sports can’t sustain themselves with sponsorships alone anymore.

But I guess I’m part of that problem, for a number of reasons.

@fabio seriously, WTF is wrong with #Canon?

  • Don't they know that they artifically kneecap themselves as noone's gonna buy that shit nor will it increase sales of their C-Series Movie Cameras?

Cuz even my first digital camera, a shitty "Polaroid ION 210" let me use it as a #Webcam and it even included a #Dock to do so without having to have a #battery inserted (it could also charge the battery and also had an extra slot for a replacement battery) that doubled as a USB Hub and SD-Cardreader!

  • #DRM and other bs is just bad, espechally on #appliances that are exensive, have no business to be connected to the Internet nor any valid reason to require a #subscription!

You know what a #DSLR & #DSLM should need to keep working? Toolfree, user-replaceable memory and batteries and a power source to get the latter recharged or powered!
