#distro

I'm about to move to a laptop rather than my desktop, in the runup to a house move.

Today, I run #Debian #Stable (#bookworm) and the #XFCE desktop. That is all fine and dandy and fits my needs.

The question is whether to try something new. Be that underlying #distro or desktop.

I have tried many times to move away from #Debian. But the stability of stable is difficult to argue with. I have also tried many different desktops. Be that

Gnome, KDE, or Cinnamon.
All of these exhibit problem areas, for me at least.

With Gnome, the Files application is so limited that I end up installing #thunar from #XFCE. Plus, I have to add a handful of extensions to make things more readily useful to me.

With Cinnamon, it's largely okay except for the file browser again. Too slow.

KDE looks pretty, and some of the applets are cool. But stability suffers.

Should I stay with the tried and tested, or is there something out there that has all the features and stability of #Debian #Stable with #XFCE.

Garage - An open-source distributed object storage service

Does any of you know about this and also use it professionally and if so in what context and how? Honestly, I'm standing up a little.

@mosgaard @amadeus if you just want distraction-free editing, you may want to look at #VScodium [1], #neovim [2] or even #NvChad [3] for editing depending on how you feel like and what suits you best.

  • I recommend using #Markdown for Text until you want to turn it into something printable (unless you know #LaTeX), but noone's gonna judge you if you prefer @libreoffice to get a script written.

If you want or need to switch computers rather often, consider buying a SATA (or NVMe) - SSD with DRAM-Cache and a matching external enclosure and install your #distro of choice on that instead, as unlike #Windows, basically all #Linux distros allow installations on external drives.
-Don't forget to use #FullDiskEncryption!

If you need to share your work with others or sync it across devices, consider @nextcloud / #nextcloud.

  • If you don't have any admin already in your organization.and it's permissible but you don't want to setup your own, consider @monocles / #monoclesOcean and @Stuxhost for a fully-managed Nextcloud at reasonable prices.

As for #audio I'm shure you know #audacity and #LMMS...

If you use the terminal rather often, consider setting up some nifty aliases to make things faster.

  • For example if you want to just check if something is reachable, i.e. internet / network connection works, consider adding function isup() { ping -a -b -c 1 -D "$@"; } to your .bash_aliases file in your $HOME directory so if you use i.e. isup duckduckgo.com it'll do a single run of ping to reach said domain/FQDN/IP...

But the final #ProTip I can give you is to #backup your $HOME-directory under /home/yourusername because in it's hidden subdirectories, espechally $HOME/.config/ are usually all the settings for your applications stored so in case you need to setup a new machine or restore one from backups, this is where all the minor changes of yours to make your system work best for you are being stored.

  • You may need to press Ctrl+H IN THE File Manager to see hidden files.

  • For backups, tools like #DéjàDup make it easy to setup, backup and restore your files as you want or need, including encryption and deduplication.

I hope that'll help you not only get started but also get the maximum efficiency out of your distro as a creative tool without fuss.

@nixCraft happened to me like yesterday, AGAIN. That's why i #GAMP5 validate and test everything (important) thoroughly before calling it a success after every major change, like before upgrading to a newer version of a #Linux #Distro or similar. Every time something broke and required #debugging and fixing in some form. We can't rely on anything that once was established. Terrible. yet... still 1000 times better than a shitty #Windows platform.

Sometimes I realize I've been using Debian instead of Windows for years, and it makes me really happy.

It's not just because I love Debian, but also because I haven't had to deal with Windows 10 for so long.

I hate Windows because you can't change much of the system-level stuff, and if you remove "explorer.exe", the system basically stops working.

On the other hand, with Debian and most other Linux distributions, I can choose the environment I want to work in myself.

I love options, I love freedom.

@kubikpixel @malwaretech @tomscott nodds in agreement

If people don't trust a #Govware like #Windows to get that done correctly, then they should not trust 3rd party vendors that have neither sourcecode access nor ability to get someone with sourcecode access to validate and test their work!

Mind you this isn't the basic *"on mailservers/upload servers/... run signature checks for known malware and chmod -x on all attachmebts.

  • It's a systemic issue discarding basic information.
