Why is a RedHat "Platform Engineering Leader & Senior Principal Software Engineer" using AI in the most facile way to ask me to do work out of nowhere? It's extremely rude, and really tone deaf coming from a company built on the knowledge and time of open source maintainers. github.com/orgs/pallets/discus #Python #Flask #RedHat

I know that @centos Stream tracks just ahead of RHEL. Is anyone running this on their server? I'm thinking about moving away from Debian on the server and wondering if @almalinux would be a better choice or, maybe, take advantage of the RH Developer Program and install RHEL? I've not worked with servers in a while (many years) so this will be a good learning experience.

Okay, so, applying to open positions within Red Hat again. I don't know why I keep abusing myself like this. I've been trying for more than 15 years to get into Red Hat and have failed (obviously). And since I've been unemployed for more than a year, I'm now at the "nothing to lose" phase, so may as well give it another try. And at the age of 58, when do I finally just give up on the idea?

Any Red Hatters out there know if Red Hat still offers the developer edition of RHEL? Actually, did they ever offer something like this? I may be mistaken. I've been wanting to give RH a try on my home server lab. If not, no worries, because I will use CentOS Stream in its place.

I'm still running Debian on my small home server (that may change soon) but I have fully embraced @fedora on the desktop. Both my laptop and desktop are running the latest Fedora and have been for about 3 months. I may go with CentOS on the server soon. Just not sure how much I really want to tackle that project right now.

Why the change? Pretty simple: Community. The Fedora community is nothing short of awesome, and in the 30+ years that I've been running Linux, I've always said that community in an open source project is the most important part of the project.

UPDATE:

I feel that I need to add a bit more context to this post. A few people have commented asking what I think is wrong with Debian and why the change. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Debian. It's an awesome Linux distribution with a great community. I've been running Linux for more than 30 years and the past 15 years, Debian has been running my hardware. I just want to try something new for a while. I still have Debian running on my server and another desktop that I do a lot of testing on. I will never completely stop using Debian.

TIL (Today I learned) that the Nikon D850 I often use for office pix takes quite large pix that are often refused by web services as being too big (please reduce to 6128x6128 pixels maximum size says LinkedIn ;). Anyway. We had a nice #RHEL10 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10) preview event in our #RedHat #Munich office today and some really good food to get ready for the big event next week :) (and yes, I have more pix with people from today, but for privacy reasons I won't post them here)

From what I've read about Fedora's eventual AI integration, it will be builtin to the core of the system. This makes me wonder if it will still be possible to create an AI-free fork of Fedora. Or to create a customized AI-free atomic version.

Yes and no.

#Apple's #iPad makes it easy to test, build and sell #CCSS [commercial closed-source software] at a premium.

  • I mean, I'm happy with my #X230Tablet but I do acknowledge this is an old device and it's rather the exception than norm...

Simply because #Wacom makes good passive stylus and pen-capable touchscreens.

  • So OFC companies that have the money and resources to build premium #apps will target the premium customers who by virtue ob being able to splash 4 digits on a tablet brand-new will be proven more able to pay for their software.

That's why #Autodesk won't even sell people a #Linux license for #Maya (or any of their other tools) unless one has proof of ownership of a certified workstation (i.e. HP Z-series) with a #RHEL [#RedHat] #Workstation #subscription active to begin with.

  • And yes they will run the machine's serial # to check if it's ordered with parts that fit their system requirements from the factory and will demand the same for RHEL. I've been there and had to do that before they even consider offering one a subscription!

Compare that to like #AffinityDesigner on #iOS (or rather "#iPadOS") and the fact that basically all iPad users are expected to have an Apple account and credit card linked to it for the #AppStore and it's no wounder the developers of creative apps will focus on that.

The only exception are #FLOSS #apps that are native to Linux and/or got started on other #Unix Systems [#blender started out on #IRIX as CCSS] and serve #macOS & #Windows as 2nd & 3rd tier platforms [i.e. #darktable oftentimes had no Windows builds because none of the devs had or wanted a Windows machine to test on!]

Let's #workTogether !

No job description yet, but, hear me out:

I've recently left #RedHat, to do something I feel is more meaningful: help build a better home for #OpenSource: @radicle

We're now looking for someone with experience in the #frontend world and a #UserExperience focus and #product builder mindset to join my team!

Boosts, to help this get to the right person without an algorithm in the way, are highly appreciated!

#Perl DBD::mysql and the corresponding #RHEL package have always been #MariaDB compatible, i.e., you could install MariaDB and DBD::mysql RPMs together.
But the new DBD::mysql package in #CentOS stream can no longer be installed with MariaDB.
I filed a bug (issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-) and #RedHat said it's not supposed to work. Except it always has.
What do you think?
(Note if it doesn't work then all Perl scripts on the host that use DBD::mysql must be modified to use DBD::MariaDB instead.)
