It's handled by the shell like Bash or Zsh. Syntax:
<(command)
command1 <(command2)

Where you would normally put an input filename for a command, you can instead put <(some_other_command2)

Screwtapello
Today I had cause to look up RMS' announcement post for the GNU project:

https://groups.google.com/g/net.unix-wizards/c/8twfRPM79u0/m/1xlglzrWrU0J

Among other things, it says:

> To begin with, GNU will be a kernel plus all the utilities needed to write and run C programs: editor, shell, C compiler, linker, assembler, and a few other things. After this we will add a text formatter, a YACC, an Empire game, a spreadsheet, and hundreds of
other things.

The GNU editor (Emacs), shell (bash), C compiler (GCC), linker (GNU ld), assembler (gas) and YACC (Bison) are all successful and well-known. I'm not sure if the "text formatter" would be `fmt` (in coreutils), groff, or something else, but it's probably also successful.

As for spreadsheets, VisiCalc had been setting the world on fire since 1979, and Lotus 1-2-3 did the same in January 1983 (RMS's message was sent in September 1983) so it doesn't surprise me that he considered it something important even though I don't actually know of an era-appropriate GNU spreadsheet.

I have no idea what "an Empire game" is, nor why it ranked higher in RMS' mind than spreadsheets. I guess it must have been something that MIT students spent a lot of time playing in their own time, like Colossal Cave Adventure (1976) and Rogue (1980)?

#unix #retrocomputing
