Do any operating systems other than #Linux (#Windows, #macOS, #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, etc) have an API for non-blocking file IO?
I know Linux has that in #io_uring, which can do almost any IO operation (even fsync) in the background and tell you when it's done, but is that the only OS with such a feature?
With 7.7 on track, I think it's time for some OpenBSD #77HYPE

job@ modified www/77.html: Name the 7.7 release artist
@alex_deplov Somebody has to make that as a stuffie for sale, along with one of Puffy to sell, or a plushie #openbsd
With the release of #OpenBSD 7.7 https://www.openbsd.org/77.html fast approaching (see the changelog at https://www.openbsd.org/plus.html), you could do worse than prepare for the event by reading "You Have Installed OpenBSD. Now For The Daily Tasks." https://nxdomain.no/~peter/openbsd_installed_now_for_the_daily_tasks.html, and explore the system for what it can offer.
Excited to share that we've achieved Bronze Sponsor status for the OpenBSD Foundation this year! Next stop: Silver
.
Big shoutout to all our users for making this possible! "
#OpenBSD peeps, help needed please- I’m trying to install 7.7 onto an older intel Macbook Pro (12,1 - 2.9Ghz i5 version). For whatever reason the installer hangs before boot after enumerating disks. I get to a boot prompt just fine and start it, but when I get to “sd0” it just hangs. Any ideas on fixing it? FWIW other things boot fine - Machine currently has Fedora 42 installed with rEFInd alongside it.
How can I troubleshoot?
While waiting for #OpenBSD 7.7 don't forget to update your 7.6 machines with the following:
014 2025-04-09 RELIABILITY Incorrect internal RRDP state handling in rpki-client can lead to a denial of service.
013 2025-04-09 SECURITY sshd(8) fix the DisableForwarding directive, which was failing to disable X11 forwarding and agent forwarding as documented.
012 2025-04-09 SECURITY iked(8) and isakmpd(8) fix double-free in ecdh mode.
I had forgotten I still had this!
There are familiar names on this paper.
Framework Laptop 12 is now on pre-order:
https://frame.work/fr/en/products/laptop12-diy-intel-13gen/configuration/new
That little machine looks gorgeous and the prices are surprisingly reasonable.
I have to resist ordering such a machine for #OpenBSD 7.7...
What about #NetBSD 10.1?
But is it supported by BSD...? Only one way to find out!
