So everything ultimately when you zoom in close enough is just physics. Matter is made of atoms and atoms are made of particles and particles are just bits of energy moving around excitedly. I might have missed a few layers but good enough for a layperson discussion.

I know there have been experiments to cool things to absolute zero, and I know we've gotten pretty close but not quite.

But what would happen at absolute zero, or do we even know for certain? If those bits of energy stop moving, do they cease to exist? Would the macro object just poof?

#Pioneering female #Chinese #American physicist Chien-Shiung Wu, who worked with Robert #Oppenheimer on the #ManhattanProject, was also the first to confirm #QuantumEntanglement – just 14 years after Albert #Einstein questioned the phenomenon. The largely forgotten achievement was included in a profile of Wu, one of the most influential experimental physicists of the 20th century, published in the December 2024 issue of Physics Today.

Wu is also believed to have been the only Chinese scientist involved in the Manhattan Project, the World War II initiative to develop an #AtomicBomb led by Oppenheimer, who affectionately referred to her as Jiejie, which means elder sister, the article said.

Wu’s experiment – detailed in a paper published in 1950 – was conducted before the #scientific community had fully grasped the significance of quantum entanglement, the article noted.

The historic ad appeared in the magazine's 1980 Jan issue, announcing a gathering to occur two years later on 1982 Mar 09, inviting #Krononauts or #TimeTravelers to beam down to #Baltimore #MD #US. The hundreds of attendees at the night's festivities were documented by a #NYTimes #newspaper reporter. Later, others would organize their own inter-dimensional meet-ups in #Perth #AU, #MIT #US, and #Cambridge #UK. (All were landing receptions of type-1.0. The message is that it's inviting readers to a "reception" or "landing party" for #TimeTravelers, or #Krononauts, that was scheduled for 2 years after the publication date of the magazine. The ad also includes phone numbers and a PO box which are all long-defunct now. The irony / humor / concept is that we are looking at this from 45 years in its future, just as real Time Travelers will one day look at it from a more distant future(s), and they could elect to travel back to #Baltimore #MD #US on 1982 Mar 09. This kind of documentation (now on #Mastodon & #Fediverse) is crucial to the successful operation of the experiment. @mariapopova I believe you correctly surmise “how staggered (Emily Dickinson’s) pliant young mind must have been to learn that scientists had just proven the existence of atoms.”

But #physicists didn’t accept the #AtomicTheory until #AlbertEinstein demonstrated its verity through Brownian motion over a *century* after #JohnDalton proposed it.

Both ‘particle #chemistry ‘ and #QuantumChemistry predate their #physics counterparts by a century since Dalton quantized *mass*!
