@fedora Sadly, #Lenovo wronged me as a professional when they refused to support their "#UbuntuCertified" #ThinkPad #P15v's #WWAN module ( #Fibocom #850GL, based on #Intel's #XMM7360 baseband).

  • And that was a €3,5k+ professional device!

Add to that the discontinuation of any #wired - #USB "ThinkPad Compact Keyboard with #UltraNav" and the only reason I've not retired my #X230Tablet for a @frameworkcomputer / #Framework13 or god forbid some #DIY abomination is my belief in #UseLonger!

@mrmasterkeyboard np.

  • I thought the glare was excessive due to the lights, but then again I'm not gonna complain more about it. Noone expects you to have a fancy mattebox with turntable to make some professional product photo.

Also even if people don't have a donor to transplant a screen assembly from or don't feel comfortable fiddling with eDP cables they could just remove the screen and have a compact AiO Desktop.

  • If it has like a "full function" #USBc port with #PowerDelivery than this can result in a sleek desktop that also looks good and doesn't require much space. Ideal if the battery is busted and a replacement isn't worth it! I've seen those in like #RepairShops where they basically setup some #MacbookPro that way as a DFU machine to reflash / reinstall other #Macs.

I think it's a necessity that we as #TechLiterates propagate the need to #UseLonger and the #RightToRepair as essential, given that #tech inherently is expensive in terms of #resources and that avoiding #eWaste and #Upcycling is an act of #EnvoirmentalProtection.

  • Tho make shure to safely remove any "#DangerPillow|s" and handing it over to the relevant #recycling provider(s)...

If I had the necessary €€€€€ I'd literally start my own "#upcycling" #business, even employ some folks collecting all the #surplus'd #Windows10 machines and just cleaning, wiping, repasting, fixing and selling them as cheap #used #PC|s for those that kinda need something to do their casual "#office", #LightGaming and #MediaConsumption.

  • I mean people are surprised how zippy even old hardware can be with just few tweaks (more RAM, a fresh SSD, cleaning it of dust bunnies and repasting the cooler with some quality (longlife #ThermalPaste, like #ArcticMX4) "#ThermalGrease" (that costs like €1/g in a 20g syringe and a #RepairShop can easily go through one in a shift)...
MastodonNerdNextDoor :Blobhaj: (@mrmasterkeyboard@mastodon.social)@kkarhan@infosec.space Thank you for the comment! In person the screen is great for me, just unfortunate camera lighting angles. :p Ubuntu is something that I thought would suit this laptop, I wasn't wrong, it's blazing fast. The startup time is only more evidence to that. I would also get something like this as well if my budget was £100 and if I couldn't fix things. #Repair and #Reuse needs to be the default, I love repairing machines. Not all broken screens and dented machines are junk, people!!!

@simonzerafa I mean obviously #reuse / #UseLonger is better and if your options are "corporate surplus" or nothing then I'd never judge.

To me it's just that #ThinkPad as a brand has really died as every single Device is a #downgrade in #repairability & #upgradeability compared to my #X230Tablet:

Personally, I wish I had €.€€€.€€€ so I could just develop the #NUCbook and be done with the #Enshittification of #Laptops / #Notebooks!

Like seriously, I'm not a prophet, but a #Linux #Sysadmin but when I tell people "#Inkjet #printers are a scam!" it's fucking grounded in reality.

  • The only reason I still have a shitty #Deskjet6122 is because that fucker refuses to die!...

Same goes for a shitty #OfficeJet #MFP who's sole purpose is to to be a #Scanner...

So yeah, espechally for #Printing, just get yourself a #refurbished #Xerox #WorkCentre or something cuz #Toner can't dry out and it'll be cheaper no matter if you print one page per year or 1.000 in a single day!

I could imagine something like a "#PipePost" / "pneumatic tube" like system to become ubiquitous - and more #standardization re: #containers for stuff due to #ResourceScarcity and the need to #UseLonger, #Repair and #Recycle way "harder"...
youtube.com/watch?v=C6D_WuLWVr

  • Tho I guess once #MSLA & #Filament printers with #CNC routers can be made into #WashingMachine - sized units that can completely print, cure and assemble stuff within minutes automatically up to 2x1x1m then I'm convinced we'll see them as ubiquitous as todays #WashingMachines, because my Grandmas grew up without any washing machine, early "clothes cookpots" and died long after modern "fire and forget" units were ubiquitous to the point that if one household doesn't have one they have communal ones in the apartment complex or can afford to go to a laundromat if not get their clothes done professionally...

I think people should be offered #FreePublicTransport if they have no driving license and/or no #car in their possession...

Personally, I'd make any subsidies basically antiproportional to MGW/Net Weight ratio, Capacity, Deadweight and price, to incentivize not #SuperUselessVehicles, but #PersonalLightVehicles.

  • This should then get the highest subsidies for people choosing a bike or pedelec, followed by (cabin) scooters and like #SmallCars like #KeiCars, capping the subsidies at 3500kg MGW / 1500kg Dead Weight so that even edgecases like families with a lot of children are not completely empty-handed.

Ideally also #UsedVehicles are eligible as most people just can't afford a new one and incentivizing #Repairability, #UseLonger & #ReUse as well as #Upcyclibg over new production is more envoirmentally friendly.

Personally whilst I'd wish every village hat 24/7 15min cycle public transport access, I also acknowledge the unavoidable edgecases, which is why I propose #PersonalLightVehicles:

  • Since energy needed for transporting is (in ideal cases!) mass × speed ^ 2, and since we can all assume that a Vmax ≥ 130km/h is deemed the lower limit of what would be seen as acceptable to flow in traffic globally, keeping mass low & minimize drag aka. 'air resistance' in terms of design should be mandatory...

@arrrg I tend to disagee...

Shure you can make the argument towards #TechIlliterates that they don't know better, but it's our failure as #TechLiterates to not just #preach and #demand #RepairableTech, but oftentimes people don't follow up their demands with actual purchase decisions.

  • OFC if one only has like $100 and they can only get an unrepairable & barely working shitPhone 4 SE from 2016 that's not to blame them, because #UseLonger & #ReUse is better than #Recycle or #BuyANewOne...

In #capitalism, the #users and #consumers do have #choices and they can decide to #unionize and collectively #refuse to buy or use garbage.

#WhatYouAllowIsWhatWillContinue applies to everything and this we need to demand and force change by all means necessary to do so.

OFC please do go ahead and choose #UnauthorizedRepair to keep your gear up and running as long as feasible anyway - just like I'll not toss out my still working #X230Tablet for a #Framework13 unless I literally have no other choice...
