Did some sampling on cross spindles last weekend. One with the longest staple 20 cm) Gotland locks and one with not-the-longest-but-still-very-long staple Gotland mixed with commercial green flax roving on a blending board. The flax is little lumps and bumps and hardly possible to draft on its own, so not a bad idea to mix it into something else. I'll try that again on my drum carder. Spindle spinning is excellent to get to know a fiber.

I've only been knitting a little bit, as of late, but I've been making a lot of yarn! Most of this is from the hedgehog fibres advent calendar, which I'm still working my way through. The last skein is a silk/angora blend I got elsewhere. #handspinning

New #introduction post!

I'm Alicia and I'm a fibre artist (#dyeing #handspinning #felting #needlefelting #weaving #crochet #embroidery #upcycling #sewing) with interests in #mandala #art #psychedelicart #sacredgeometry #neurographicart and #watercolors.

My family and I run a business called @Fibre2Fabric where we dye all sorts of exotic #fibre #yarn, and #fabric.

I live in the country with my partner and our 6 #cats, 3 #dogs, #snake and #crestedgecko where I enjoy my many interests. (#gardening #plants #herbalism #fungi #music #ukulele #piano #dancing #flowart #reading #writing #tarot #poetry #haiku #cozygames and I'm getting more into #opensource / #linux)

When I say flow art, I mean spinning props like #hulahoop #leviwand #puppyhammer #poi #staff #silkfans #firefans etc.

I love #languagelearning. I studied #German and #Spanish as a kid, took #Japanese in uni, and I'm currently studying #ASL #Cree #Tokipona #Spanish and #Chinese. I also dabble in #French and #Latin sometimes and I'm learning #Greggshorthand to write faster. Cree is my favourite language and Spanish is my second.

I've been cursed since childhood with that lovely trifecta of #heds #pots and #mcas. Healing slowly but surely.

Hope I get to meet even more cool people the algorithms would normally drown out on other social media sites. I love it here!

The other morning I was thinking about the possibility of making supported spindles out of metal (instead of wood or 3D printed polymer) - machining them I guess? I imagine a nicely shaped shaft, and a disc of some sort for the bottom weight, possible threaded on the shaft and on the disc to allow the discs to be changed out as desired. That’s the simple version, before adding cool features. #spinning #handspinning #metalwork @LilPecan @JamesK

Yesterday, I posted a picture of the single strand of my yarn wound into a cake for plying. Today, here's the finished yarn, washed and air-dried, and caked again for knitting. Looks a little like a cut red cabbage, huh? Except gray instead of purple. A noir cabbage. #handspinning #handmade

I completed a 3rd handspun hexiflat (top middle). It’s a little larger due to thicker yarn but by the time I have 500 more and sew them up I’m sure that’ll block right out”. Plus I’ll have lots of slightly different sizes to mix and match. I wonder if I’ll remember the provenance of each of my hexiflats. Maybe the handspun ones, if I take notes. Bottom middle, a hexiflat made from regular fingering sock yarn (not handspun). #knitting #handspun #handspinning #spinning #FiberArts #BeekeepersQuilt

This is one stage of #spinning yarn, the plying. After making one long strand, called a single, I wind it into a fat cake so I can put my finger through thru the center to wind both ends together at the same time, making a 2 ply yarn. This is more yarn for my ongoing blanket I'm making with fur from my kitties. See alt text for more details. I'll post another progress pic in a few days. #handspinning #handmade #handcraft

My first true skein of yarn from my supported spindles is done! It does seem fluffier and airier than yarn I’ve made previously. And concerns about unevenness and slubs seem to have been mostly addressed by the plying and setting. Plan is to cake it and make a hexiflat and then keep the rest as a sample. In the meantime, I have more rolags I can start spinning on the supported spindles plus I need to get back to the WIP on my wheel. #supportedSpindle #spinning #HandSpinning #Fiberarts

I have a strong inkling that if woodturning were one of my skill sets I would now be trying to figure out how to become a maker of support spindles. Because they are beautiful and functional and lovely. But the last time I did any woodworking I was in 7th/8th grade (I grew up in a place where it was mandatory in public school curriculum). Instead of learning to make my own I will just get better at using them, and then make more and more yarn. #fiberArts #spinning #HandSpinning #supportedSpindle

#supportedSpindle #HandSpinning day 7 cont’d - kind of a breakthrough evening! I had the idea to use my needle sizer (8 mm hole) to dizz part of my rolag and it worked! Then I spun in bed while watching TV (a goal!). AND, I managed to keep the spindle spinning while drafting. It happened! I did it once, and then I did it a few more times! Not consistently, but more than once! Plus, I got better at winding on! One week of spinning a little every day is actually working to get better! #FiberArts

#handspinning with #supportedSpindle days 6 and 7. Long days in a “offsite” remotely. Not a lot of time to spin but squeezed in a few minutes each day. Starting to get the hang of it - need flicking practice to get the spindle spinning consistently and longer. Managed to spin a little under my lap desk out of sight of the camera during a lull. (I consider this a big level up). wish could say “hey this helps me focus on the meeting” but nope not for this kind of event. No pic. #FiberArts
