This week I cast on this lovely Staghorn Aran Pattern by Janet Szabo

The yarn I'm using is #HandSpunYarn from a black Finn Sheep fleece I bought this spring. I'll use ~ 3 or 4 lbs for this project, which is roughly half the fleece. No idea what I'm going to do with the rest of it ... not to mention the 2nd one!

Yarn is woolen spun and chain plied to about 8 WPI. The stitch definition is moderate, but pairs well with this heavily textured pattern

the sweater in question, taken from the pattern's store page. The photographer and model are uncredited, but the pattern is by Janet Szabo of Big Sky Knitting Designs LLC. It is a heavily cabled pullover done in worsted weight yarn, with a big panel of interweaving cables down the middle, standard cables on either side, and staghorn cables on the edges of the body. The staghorn cables are a set of two cables that twist away from a center point, and create a design similar to that of the antlers of a deer. The pattern of interweaving cables from the front center make a reappearance down the lengths of the sleeves, and the undersides of the arms are textured with a simple Irish moss stitch. There is thick twisted ribbing along all of the hemlines.

Ok this one is less me being sick and more me being, ah shit in a month I have to be in autumn weather. Colour patterning is due to necessity: I never spun enough yarn in one colour and I really just like to spin fine, so I worked out something that.... could be autumnal? We'll see, we're in Chart E now of this pattern : ravelry.com/patterns/library/p

An in-progress knitted lace shawl with three balls of laceweight yarn feeding into it (purple, lilac, and rustic red brown). You can see the shawl began with a saffron orange stranded with white, then orange, buttercup yellow, and white, then yellow, white, and red brown and then the current colour combo.

In happier news, the spindle that I thought was broken/lost (a Turkish spindle comes in mobile parts and the main rod of one of mine disappeared) is no longer so. Coincidentally I've just vacuumed under the bed. 😌

Plus, that had me sorting my newly plied yarn into my (what I thought) new bag of just-finisheds, except as you can see, that's a lot of finished yarn that needs to have their twist set!

Here’s the handspun I finished while isolating. I got a chance to give it a wash and whack to help set the twist.

This is a chain (or Navajo) 4ply which is an unusual construction. The main colour (dyed by Southern Cross Fibres) is chained during plying with the accessory ply being carried along.

It’s a challenging technique suited to spinners who are comfortable with regular chain ply and who have a tensioned Kate.
