#Wildfire kills 10 firefighters and rescue workers in #Turkey

Updated 5:01 PM EDT, July 23, 2025

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — "At least 10 firefighters and rescue workers were killed Wednesday and many others injured while battling a wildfire in northwestern Turkey, Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said.

"The five #forestry workers and five members of the AKUT rescue organization died while trying to put out the wildfire raging through a forested area of #Eskisehir province, Yumakli said. At least 14 other rescuers and forestry workers were hospitalized, he said.

"The deaths bring the number of fatalities in wildfires that have flared amid strong winds, high temperatures and dry conditions so far in the country this year to 13.

"The minister said the wind suddenly changed direction, causing the flames to shift rapidly and surround the forest workers. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

"Yumakli said firefighters were currently battling seven wildfires in Turkey, including the one in Eskisehir, adding that #ExtremeHeat and volatile wind conditions also were expected in Turkey on Thursday."

Outdoor work in #SouthernEurope’s tourist hot spots is becoming hellish

By JOSEPH WILSON, DEREK GATOPOULOS and TRISHA THOMAS
Updated 5:21 AM EDT, July 24, 2025

"Cruel heat is baking southern Europe as the continent slips deeper into summer.

"In homes and offices, air conditioning is sweet relief. But under the scorching sun, outdoor labor can be grueling, brutal, occasionally even deadly.

"A street sweeper died in #Barcelona during a heat wave last month and, according to a labor union, 12 other city cleaners have suffered heatstroke since. Some of Europe’s powerful unions are pushing for tougher regulations to protect the aging workforce from climate change on the world’s fastest-warming continent."

…“This brings us back to basic science.

It seems counterintuitive that the weight of CO2 emissions would be greater than the mass of coal burned.

The extra weight comes from 1 carbon combining with 2 oxygen in combustion, to create carbon dioxide.

It’s also why rusting makes iron weigh more.”

#ClimateDiary Interesting: i hadn’t realised the “boiling frog effect” was official terminology. More catchy than “shifting baseline syndrome” !

Study on how to present information on climate change shows stark “before-after” comparisons are more effective than charts tracking gradual increases.

Climate Justice SocialDarker Knight (@darkerknight@climatejustice.social)Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, Professor Liz Bentley, said: “This latest edition of the State of the UK Climate report reinforces the clear and urgent signals of our changing climate, rooted in robust observational science. It documents changes in temperature, rainfall, sea level, and weather extremes that are affecting lives, infrastructure, and ecosystems across the UK. “The report draws particular attention to the last decade that clearly shows how quickly our climate is evolving to inform policy, resilience planning, and adaptation. Perhaps most striking is the growing impact of extremes. While long-term averages are shifting, it is the extreme heat, intense rainfall and droughts that are having the most immediate and dramatic effects on people and nature. This report is not just a record of change, but a call to action.” Met Office Chief Scientist, Prof Stephen Belcher, said: “We are experiencing more severe weather events in the UK due to climate change. They are a potent reminder of our responsibility to citizens now, and to future generations, to accelerate efforts to adapt our society and infrastructure to cope with these weather extremes. The climate is likely to continue to change, and so we need to prepare for the impacts that will have on the weather we experience on the ground.” Dr Svetlana Jevrejeva from the National Oceanography Centre, said: “The storm surge events the UK experienced in 2024 demonstrate the potential for the UK to be affected by coastal flooding. As sea levels continue to rise around the UK, this risk is only going to increase further. The timing of storms relative to the spring-neap tidal cycle is critical, but, as we know from historical events, it is only a matter of time until the UK is next in the path of a major storm surge event. This extra sea level rise contribution is leading to an increase in the frequency of extreme sea levels and an intensification of coastal hazards”. source: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news-and-media/media-centre/weather-and-climate-news/2025/annual-climate-stocktake-shows-weather-records-and-extremes-now-the-norm-in-uk-climate #climate #ClimateChange

Following some family discussions last night on jobs and AI, I'm pondering on what to advise kids to do with their education / jobs / careers in an era of climate change, AI and collapsing economies. The best thing I can come up with is get skills or knowledge in something related to the real, physical world. That might be knowledge about science, the natural world, healthcare or education. Or skills like growing food, music, drawing, sewing or repairing stuff. I would advise them to have more than one skill or specialist subject as something to fall back on. What would you say to young people today? #ClimateDiary #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #AI #Economics #Education

Chez la marchande de legumes, 2020

At the Vegetable Seller’s, a piece from Baudouin Mouanda’s series Le Ciel de Saison (Seasonal Sky) which recreates the 2020 lockdown floods in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, with those who experienced them. During the floods it was impossible to get into inundated streets. Mouanda instead gathered personal testimonies to reconstruct the desolation later.

“The world we are about to inhabit is a dystopia of re-constructed facts where our level of interaction with this world will be much like being trapped inside a dream: all we can do is observe what is being done to us without any power to react, or resist.”

Excellent piece by George Tsakraklides. (And yes, i am aware its on Substack. No need to comment on this.)
