Notes From An Unspecified Time
After a couple of weeks fielding a few (un)usually stressful projects, I eventually managed to pull my usual stunt of falling ill during a short vacation, during which I mostly sip(...)

Are there any thoughts on the performance of the Rockchip RK3588 processor in the MNT Reform Next? I'd love to give it a try, but the last experiment with an ARM processor for a Linux everyday notebook (Thinkpad X13s) didn't go well. And I'm a bit hesitant to spend >1000 just to experiment.
Banana Pi BPI-CM5 Pro RK3576, The best replacement for the Raspberry Pi CM4, BPI-CM5 Pro, with RPI cm4 base board, fully compatible, all interfaces are tuned.
Ok, I'm intrigued by this modular ARM-based Linux laptop with an RK3588 and 16 or 32GB RAM for $1600. https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next
But the #Powkiddy #RGB10X is an interesting option as well; similar performance as the #RG35XXPlus so it's one analog stick could do some #PS1 #gaming! It's got official support from #Batocera and #ArkOS, but I bet it gets #Rocknix support soon.
$40 is a good deal for a #Rockchip powered #handheld!

@SpeedStar76 I'm actually wondering if I need to upgrade to an RG556. Originally the price was so high I couldn't justify it compared to a SteamDeck, but now that I've seen what #Rocknix can do, and how powerful that #RK3588 is I feel like a #Rockchip with proper cooling solution can probably handle #PSP and #Gamecube perfectly!
I've been doing a lot of research about #RetroGaming #handhelds and #SBCs. There's a ton of very weak quad core #ARM devices that run #games all the way up to #Dreamcast, and #GameCube! RaspberryPi level; things with screens and buttons hardwired to them.
But then there are the #OrangePi boards with #Rockchip #SoC that have 2 more cores! That makes them even faster than the #Unisoc chip in the #retroidPocket4Pro which easily handles #PS2. No screens or buttons though..
@oldthink34 well it depends on the SoC mainly; there are projects like #Rocknix that have #Linux distros for various #Rockchip based handhelds. #Lakka supports a lot of #Amlogic devices, #Batocera supports a bunch of others.
That #Razer is based on a #Snapdragon G3X which is a beast of a chip, but I'm not aware of any opensource distros on #Qualcomm chips.
Maybe some #Ayaneo #PocketS owners have heard of something? #ayaNeoPocketS
I still think it's odd that you don't see the #BCM2711 in any other #SBCs
There's a #RockChip and #Amlogic in EVERYTHING; they use the same #Arm cores, as the #RaspberryPi but in different configurations. There are versions with 3.2 USB, and 2.5 Ethernet!
There are DOZENS of devices made by a dozen or more companies using #Allwinner, #Unisoc, #Dimensity, or #qualcomm chips, but there's only one company making #BCM devices.
Rockchip teases the upcoming RK3688 processor with an Armv9.3 CPU (probably Cortex-A7xx/A5xx) and an NPU with up to 16 TOPS AI performance. It's expected to launch in 2025 or 2026. #Chips #Arm #Rockchip #RK3688 https://www.cnx-software.com/2024/10/04/rockchip-rk3688-armv9-3-aiot-processor-to-feature-a-16-tops-npu-ufs-4-0-storage/
I've had an #Anbernic #RGArcS sitting around in a box waiting for me to play with it for months and I just now learned about #RockNix
> #JELOS (ROCKNIX) is an immutable #Linux #distribution for #handheld #gaming devices focused on #retroGaming #emulation. It is #openSource
It supports #RockChip/ #AmLogic devices from #OrangePi #Powkiddy #IndieDroid #HardKernel and #Gameforce too!

Rockhip's new RK3582 processor is a cheaper alternative to the RK3588S, but it has fewer Cortex-A76 cores, no GPU, and a slightly less powerful NPU. https://buff.ly/3TvJ1qd #Rockchip #Processors #RK3582
