🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 182 (new software edition!) ☁️

Good morning Fedi friends!

This #GoToSocial account is officially back to posting about... self-hosting from the POV of a newbie / non-dev.

This morning I hit a new little milestone: I FINALLY installed #NextCloud on my VPS (thank you #YunoHost).

I'm getting ready to share short clips of my Fedi promo video (that anybody could use / upload on their own accounts - esp. Big Tech ones, if they're so inclined) and I needed a solution to let people download files. NextCloud is perfect for the task - and something I had looked forward to installing for a looooong time.

I'll share more details soon, but so far I'm excited to finally use it.

Wishing everyone a great day! 🌞

Magari a qualcuno torna utile. #selfhosting o morte.
Cheers 🍻

#CommunityHosting #Ops

A small group of us are working on community level hosting of 'self-hosted' FOSS tools (think #NextCloud and more) setup as a local service offering for local grassroots organisations. We're seeking advice/tips/guidance.

We're keen to do some orchastration but want to avoid the complexity of say Kubernetes.

As a start we were looking at Ansible with Docker Swarm but we're now exploring other alternatives.

Anyone have experience at this sort of hobbist just a bit bigger than #HomeLab Ops scale?

#Pyinfra is being considered as an Ansible, in the projects words "Think ansible but Python instead of YAML, and a lot faster." (pyinfra.com)

Anyone have experience at this homelab/small hosting level? Would love any tips/suggestions for tools/approaches.

One source of inspiration is the 12Factor app methodology: 12factor.net

Personally, as a rubyist I'm always keen to know what the ruby community is doing in this space also.

Haven't seen many others doing work at this scale, lets use the tag #CommunityHosting to keep connected :)

Hello, techhub and #Fediverse residents. I've been on Fedi for a good year or two, and am coming back after a decent break. I have many hobbies, namely tinkering with #Linux, computers, and other geek stuff. I like #gaming and #retro games too. I like #anime, #manga, and anything weeby. I particularly love #Tokusatsu and #Mecha, and other sorts of JP media. That's about it for now. I want to look into #selfhosting my own instance and services in the future, so I don't know how permanent this home will be, but I look forward to communicating with people all the same.

Hey adventurers!
Come around, pull a chair and sit by the fire, it's time for an announcement.

We decided to host a new free service (surprise surprise!) and this time is Mobilizon

We decided to give all you gamers, streamers, content creators, etc. a brand new federated place where you'll be able to put your event/calendar, may it be about live streaming, publishing videos/podcast/audiobooks/books/whatever on your channel or just looking for some players for a cozy night. It's a calendar, it's a LFG tool, it's a plane - no wait, scratch this one - and it's yours and as always it's free of charge :)

You'll find the new service here

Seeing how much we expanded our self hosted catalog, we feel it's about time to publish a FAQ page on our blog and we will in the next few weeks. In the meantime, feel free to reach our staff and ask directly on Mastodon/Discord/Matrix/IRC

#SelfHosting surely is the way to go, *if* you're not writing ✍️ content critical of today's authoritarian leaders, political or corporate/ #TechnoFeudalist.

If s. o. reaches a level of significant reach as to annoy them, however, the self-hosting author's takedown might by mortally permanent.

But I don't want to rain on your parade, Elena.

The main advantage of the #Fediverse might be that it is so versatile, as to cater for all use cases and most security necessities.

I just pulled out my old server from before the move a couple years ago. It's an optiplex 7010. That's hardly a powerhouse, but it'll be enough to run nextcloud. I also found a WD 4TB HDD.

So, time for some upgrades.

I ordered a second identical HDD so I can have RAID storage. I also ordered a 250GB SATA SSD for the operation system, and a caddy to hold it in a spare disk bay.

Then a 32GB ram kit, the max supported.

Total spend: approx $100 after some credit card rebates

Monero is a cryptocurrency with strong privacy properties by default, but your wallet still needs a way to connect privately to the network. The best solution is to run your own Monero node, a copy of the blockchain which allows you to connect without anyone else knowing when you're using your wallet or sending transactions.

Our latest tutorial showcases how to easily set up your own Monero node on your TrueNAS server, using MAGIC Grants's pre-packaged Monero apps: privacyguides.org/articles/202
