In case you missed it, the hosting providers @fedihost@mstdn.social make nice video tutorials for Fediverse admins. They're easy to understand and mainly aimed at admins using managed hosting:

🌱 video.fedihost.co/videos/browse

You can follow their video account at:

🌱 @fedihost@video.fedihost.co

The videos currently cover Mastodon, PeerTube and GoToSocial. They also make videos for end users, and podcast discussions about the Fediverse.

I created a new collection on my Ghost blog for #MySoCalledSudoLife posts:

My ultimate goal is to gather there all the #selfhosting posts I published on this #GoToSocial account this year, organized by month (aka: "my adventures in self-hosting: January 2025" etc.)

As I said before, it's not very efficient to have to scroll back in my GoToSocial archives to read up about some of the challenges I faced / solutions I found. Having everything in one place on my website feels really empowering.

What else is going on?

🔥 I'm currently testing #Bonfire - and really enjoying it so far.

☁️ I'm reading up about #NextCloud - the latest free open-source software I installed - because it has so many sophisticated functionalities and I want to take full advantage of them.

🚶‍♀️ and now off I go pick up my little one from her afternoon summer program... and then: gelato! 🍨

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 212 (consolidating edition) 🎛

If you followed my (mis)adventures yesterday and all the issues I had with caching and #CDN for my #Wordpress site, well, I found a solution.

💫 Something that had been in front of me the whole time
💫 ZERO additional costs

Ta-da: 👻

Question to the home lab and self hosted communities: what's the go-to cloud backup service these days? I've been using Backblaze, but there have been some controversies about their future. Are those irrelevant?

Additional context: I need to run backups both from Linux (doesn't matter the tool) and Synology (their native backup tool).

TIA (thanks in advance)

A "micro" blog post detailing recent experiments with my #Wordpress blog and efforts to protect it against the Mastodon Hug of Death / stampede:

Was 🐇 CDN successful? I'll publish an update soon.

had an issue with my self-hosted #matrix server today, got "could not decrypt" message for anything one person said, but they could see my messages

this is a common issue, here's what fixed it:

  1. on the affected user, go to security and "lost recovery key"
  2. save that recovery key somewhere safe where they (and nobody else) can get it later
  3. set "share keys with" to "all devices" on both sides (otherwise you "can not decrypt" the verification request/response)
  4. do a verification
  5. you can drop down back to "verified devices only" now

so long as everyone has their recovery key saved somewhere good, it should keep working across devices

Never a dull day in this #selfhosting journey: editing important #DNS records while your child is on summer holiday - and may come see you every few minutes - is a very interesting exercise in concentration.

Special thanks to nonna (grandma) for helping with childcare this morning 😅

I'm hoping I'm successful in setting up a more solid #CDN for my personal website because I keep DDOS'ing myself (from a simple Mastodon reply to a federated Wordpress post - 8k followers will do that).

Wish me luck!

P.S.: another moment of gratitude / deep appreciation for #VarnishCache which has been providing rock solid caching to my #Ghost site. Now I need to take care of my #Wordpress site with a pro CDN solution (Varnish isn't an option sadly bc of the Wordpress setup / I don't have direct access to the server)

Sometimes #selfhosting is not about the actual software but also self improving the space you work on. This weekend was about placing fake stone stickers in the wall of what I call my #homelab office, changing Zigbee sensors batteries and replacing a Tuya window sensor that died for a Sonoff. To come in near future: Edison LED wall lamps (hence the cable hanging) and ideally, tidying up my messy cave

Por estos días sumé a mis servicios selfhosteados wallabag, una aplicación para guardar páginas web estilo pocket. También probé linkwarden, que si bien es más bonita y tiene más funciones, consume considerablemente más recursos, especialmente RAM.

Honest question for #selfhosting #homelab I have a blog and a set of static websites. I don’t sell anything im not a business, but I also don’t have anything for GDPR/cookie management etc. is that a legal potential issue? Or as I am an individual I shouldn’t care? What are the “rules” for that?
