:skull360: We’ve successfully upgraded to:

- v4.4.0-beta.2+mementomods-2025-06-21
- Mastodon Bird UI 2.2.0rc3

This is a minor upgrade.

This update includes the latest nightly build, so everything should be as current as possible. The branches are synced and up to date.

- Mastodon core (main branch): 35 new commits
- Mastodon Bird UI (nightly branch): 2 new commits

As always, if you notice anything strange or buggy, please let me or any of the other admins know. We’re running bleeding-edge software, after all.

Enjoy your time here! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or thoughts. :bunhdheart:

new release of #Fedialgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, counts the number of times each hashtag appears in your timeline even if people don't use a "#" character to give you a better sense of what people are talking about in the Fediverse.

there's a little bit of art vs. science here because some strings are disqualified from this kind of counting (e.g. a word like "the" should not be counted even if some maniac decided to make it a hashtag) so let me know if you see any weirdly high counts.

I'm surprised by this:

mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra

I can see some instances wanting this to be a site-level decision and this is an administrator opt-_in_.

Where I think that breaks is on mastodon.social and other large instances. There also needs to be a per-user countermand for people on instances who have opted-in their instances. So I think I'm overall against it for those reasons.

Either way, given the previous dispute, it should've been better publicised I think. And administrators SUPER NEED TO TELL THEIR USERS if they do this.

Oh yes, and for the record, while I'm opted in to the BlueSky bridge personally and support others who choose to opt in, I will not be opting in this instance as a whole.

MastodonMastodon Migration (@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online)NOTICE: Your account may soon be bridged to #Bluesky whether or not you want it to be. According to @LaurensHof@fediversereport.com's excellent Fediverse Report (https://fediversereport.com/fediverse-report-121/) changes have been made to the Bluesky bridge. "Bridgy Fed, the bridging software that connects ActivityPub with ATProto, has gotten an update where server admins can opt-in to the bridge for their entire server." Thought Bluesky bridge opt-in vs opt-out was settled. Why has this been done without soliciting community input?

If you're running a public Mastodon server but you have additional features not available on vanilla Mastodon, you might want to tell people about them in your server description. (For example some have higher character limits, more poll options, markdown text formatting etc.)

Whatever your server's extras are, they can be a really good "hook" for people who are trying to find a new home on the Fediverse, and it encourages them to read more about your server.

When you change longstanding placements of navigational links, esp a social media site, it really can screw up people that rely on #a11y #UI #GUI, like moving Notifications, probably the second most clicked link in #Mastodon from under Home to other placements down on the list.

I hope they reconsider this in the final V4.4.0 release. Keep Notifications in the number two spot.

NYC1 Network Maintenance on #DigitalOcean

Scheduled for Jun 18, 22:00 UTC - Jun 19, 00:00 UTC

During the above window, our Networking team will be making changes to the core networking infrastructure to improve performance and scalability in the NYC1 region.

Expected impact:

During the maintenance window, users may experience delays or failures with event processing for a brief duration on Droplets and Droplet-based services, including Droplets, Managed Kubernetes, Load Balancers, Container Registry, and App Platform. Additionally, regular requests via the Public API, as well as viewing and submitting requests through the Cloud Control Panel, may time out or fail for up to 5 minutes. We will endeavor to keep this to a minimum for the duration of the change.

Been screwing around with Nixos today and holy crap, this is the fastest I have ever setup a Mastodon instance.

Added everything in as described on the wiki and BOOM! The instance came up and I could create an account.

I still know NOTHING about Nixos other than some YouTube knowledge but I kinda feel like this can replace Ubuntu for my servers that I run.

Also... I DIDN'T KNOW CHANING THE FAVICON WAS BUILT INTO MASTODON NOW. I have just updated the esper.lol one.

:skull360: We’ve successfully upgraded to v4.4.0-beta.1+mementomods-2025-06-14 along with Mastodon Bird UI 2.2.0rc @mementomorisocial. This update includes the latest nightly build, so everything should be as current as possible. The branch is now synced and up to date - 158 changes ahead of the previous version, v4.4.0-alpha.5+mementomods-2025-05-25.

🚀 This is a major upgrade with lots of under-the-hood changes. Here are some of the main updates:

- The automatic dark/light theme system for Mastodon Bird UI is now finally working
- The release candidate for Mastodon Bird UI has been upgraded to 2.2.0rc, with many tweaks to support the new UI, please see release notes: github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mas
- The "Lists" menu no longer appears as a hover menu; instead, there’s now an experimental arrow toggle
- Personal user settings are now found under the "More" item in the navigation
- The mobile bottom navigation has been completely rewritten

Note: Search is currently reindexing and may not work perfectly yet. We’re still in maintenance mode, so occasional hiccups might happen. Thanks for your patience.

The side arrow in Mastodon nightly is a bit distracting visually. Could we make "Lists" as a button instead, with an item "Show all lists" underneath? Since we're accessing lists directly, that might make the interface cleaner.

I'm not sure who to ping for this quick thought, so I'll just ping @renchap for now.

Inspired by a post by fellow #mastoadmin @TobiasFrech to share how much storage space a Mastodon instance might use. This is #vmstio data after running since October 2022.

Database: 233GB
Search Index: 9GB
Media: 2TB

Then there is stuff like backups and logs which get shipped around, compressed, etc but is around 120GB on average. (We only backup media from local users.)

If you think WOW THAT IS A LOT OF DATA! I BET THE COSTS IS A LOT? then the answer is YES IT DOES -- If you're a member, check out docs.vmst.io/funding to find out how you can help cover the cost.

docs.vmst.ioFundingRunning a full-featured, highly available, and performant Mastodon server, costs money. We don't have investors, run ads, or sell your data. vmst.io is funded by the membership of the server. Without you, we don't exist.

Are you running a small Mastodon server? Do you want to increase how much of the Fediverse is visible to your server?

Here is a guide to how you can build up connections with the rest of the Fediverse more quickly:

➡️ fedi.tips/using-relays-to-quic

TL:DR - Follow accounts and groups relevant to your server, subscribe to relevant topic-specific relays, install Hypebot, install FediFetcher.

You don't have to do all of these, but each one helps.

More from Fedi.Tips

#FediAlgo will now let you filter your feed by the server your timeline toots are originating from. You can also choose whether to color highlight hashtags you've participated in or favourited and some other fun stuff.
