About 10 days of round and round to install Motion 5 on my #rpi

hey where did you#libcamera go?

how to install libcamera to know if my camera is working before I try troubleshooting it in Motion?

How to install #meson to install libcamera?

How to install #ninja to install #meson

Why didn't I go with a regular dashcam? Oh right, no one BUILDS a privacy aware dashcam that will upload to MY server. AT ANY PRICE. #latestagecapitalism

@dannotdaniel @mgarvey My experience installing #PiHole an #RPi 3B was also painless. What took more effort was finding the right blocklists to add. As you can imagine, there are a set of long-lived sites to block as well as new ones that popup all the time. Some lists are very specialized (e.g., malware) and others more catchall. I have settled into a handful of lists that do a great job. Just to share, my hosts lists are in the pictures, attached. #selfhost #privacy

Lately I've been doing more #SelfHosting again due to the current situation. Of course, I'm paying particular attention to power consumption and noise. After good experiences with the #ARM64 architecture, even with power-hungry applications such as Mastodon, I'm now using the smartphone technology for my homeservers, too.

There are #SBCs with more open hardware, but the #RaspberryPi is widely available, well documented, powerful and inexpensive. And it is available with up to 16 GB of RAM.

Anyone operating a server on the Internet must install #security updates quickly. However, many people forget to restart running software so that the new version runs instead of the old one. The #needrestart tool helps with this on Debian-based Linux systems, which unfortunately is usually not pre-installed.

On my Raspberry Pi 4, needrestart always runs correctly (automatically after apt upgrade). On my Raspberry Pi 5, however, I first had to create a configuration file as described by the main developer here:
github.com/liske/needrestart/b
Previously, the tool always claimed that a reboot was necessary because it thought an outdated Linux kernel was running.

Next, I want to activate #LUKS hard drive encryption on both raspis. Unfortunately, this is not as easy under #Raspbian or #RaspberryPiOS as on other Debian systems. If you have managed this: Please let me know how you did it!

Starting a thread about #peepr my peephole thingamabob! So I can post updates here for it.

Here is the first draft of the cylinder that will connect to the dome (on the wider side there). Camera dome will be held by two screws and will be secured against people turning it from the outside.

To the small end of the cylinder the inside "box" will connect and in it will be the computer and monitor.

I will order some cables and a new #Raspberry camera to test how the commonly available parts of the #RPI ecosystem will fit into this project.
Might use a lower memory Raspberry Pi 5 for this and have a #NVME hat on it for added storage for video recording, but I'm not sure about that yet.

I am just drawing out my ideas, the measurements are not the actual ones I will use for my own door when it comes to it.

I am—and have been for a while—going through the process of #demeta and #degoogle my life as much as I can. For reasons too numerous to mention, but you‘ll be able to think of the main ones. An appraisal, so far…

#Meta

✅ Stopped using #Facebook years ago but have finally deleted all posts, photos, likes, follows, and interactions I ever had on there (going back to 2007). Batch delete was hardly “batch” so this was laborious (and I know delete isn't really delete but it felt good to see stuff disappear!)

✅ Deleted all of my photos from #Instagram. Now I just use #Pixelfed. On my phone, I use the @impressia app. The next step is to run my own, single-user instance on a #RaspberryPi at home (as I do with Mastodon) and get off pixelfed.social

❌ #WhatsApp is tricky. I'm in groups where I know I have no chance of converting everyone to an alternative platform. Cutting myself off from the herd (of IRL friends) isn't an option. Will reluctantly live with this for the time being.

✅ Don’t use Messenger; never used Threads.

#Google

✅ Switched from Google to #DuckDuckGo for search on all devices. Deleted search history in Google account.

✅ Migrated mail and calendar from Google to @fastmail. I was briefly considering either self-hosting with #Citadel or using #iCloud Mail, but Fastmail was the better option for me. Very pleased so far; thanks to @tekphloyd for sending me in the right direction!

✅ Switched from Google Authenticator to @ente Auth for #2FA

✅ Switched from Google Maps to Apple Maps.

✅ No longer using Google Analytics on any personal sites; currently trialling @Matomo which is #FOSS and self-hosted.

✅ No longer using Google Fonts on any personal sites.

✅ Removed Google’s Gboard as the software keyboard on iPhone; now using the Grammarly keyboard.

*Update Jul-24: switched from Grammarly to Typewise PRO software iOS keyboard (privacy concerns)

✅ Deleted a bunch of old Gmail accounts that hadn't been used in ages. Now using masked email addresses, so don't need these kinds of accounts now.

✅ Don’t use Chrome, only Safari.

✅ iOS since the beginning of smartphones; never used Android.

✅ Already using iCloud+ for photo library sync and any file cloud storage/mirroring; no need for Google Photos or Drive.

✅ Still old school MS Word/Excel for me, so don't use Google Docs.

❌ I don't upload video but I do watch a lot on #YouTube and—as with WhatsApp—I‘m not willing to cut myself off; no current viable alternative.

❌ My #SmartHome setup has quite a lot of Google: home wifi mesh and voice assistant, plus #Nest cameras, doorbell, and thermostat. Hmm. TBD.

✅ And of course I left the bird site in the great migration of Nov ‘22 and came here. As of 2025, I’m self-hosted so my data physically lives in my home office on a #RPi with full and incremental backups running to an external disk. Planning to upgrade from SD card to SSD.

N.B. I have my reasons for not completely deleting some of the above accounts; they will remain dormant.
