Something I thought was old and boring until I tried it for myself: #RSS

I especially like it in combination with a way to sync/backup your feeds, like #FreshRSS, which I'm self-hosting. It's duct taped together for now as I first wanted to try it out, but I'm liking it so far. I had seen those RSS buttons on websites for a while and I never had a way to use them. I guess that's the fun of self-hosting: you notice a problem, and you can always find a solution.

And done. That's 4385 files, totalling 557GB of Techno sessions, from 2017 to today, downloaded and tagged with sufficiently good id3 tags. 211 days of listening now ahead of me ;) And I've learned a bit about how rss for podcasts with some apple extras work[1]. Worth it. The script[2] now runs once a night as cronjob to fetch the newest sets and add them to my Plex server :)

@BrodieOnLinux @qdot I find this to be the worst way to decide a #TechStack.

  • If #IT was developed and maintained that way, we'd not have #Linux or even #Windows, most likely not even #CPM & #UNIX because "everyone uses punchcards and tubes, so stop complaining!"...

#NetworkEffects are #toxic when it comes to #SaaS and #proprietary shite, regardless if the bad guys are #discord, #Autodesk, #Adobe, #Apple or #Microsoft for that matter. (Don't even get me started on #SAP & #Oracle!)…

  • I just don't vibe with that appeal and would rather #SelfHost than compromise. If that makes me an outlyer then I'm happy to pay that price!

But if I was wrong, I 'd not be called upon as a Linux #Sysadmin and to act as "#BenevolentDictator" in terms of Tech Stack Decisions...

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)@MxVerda@lgbtqia.space @BrodieOnLinux@mstdn.social @qdot@buttplug.engineer Well, depending on what you want to develop or communicate there are various options. - Many folks went from #GitHub to @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de / #Codeberg to do their #FLOSS development as it too has #IssueTrackers and means to discuss things without #loginwalled read-only access. Others like @torproject@mastodon.social have their own @gitlab@mastodon.social / #GitLab servers #SelfHosted. - If you want a #Chat then consider #LiberaChat if you don't demand #privacy. Otherwise @delta@chaos.social / #deltaChat and/or #XMPP via @monocles@monocles.social & @gajim@fosstodon.org may be an option. - If you do want some #LoginWalling for some reason, consider @zulip@fosstodon.org / #ZulipChat as it has a nice #threading model that can handle both asynchronous communication and high traffic without becoming unfindable or unarchiveable. Otherwise there's like @RocketChat@fosstodon.org / #RocketChat which also works great by my own experience. Case in point: #discord just makes it more cumbersome and painful than anything. It's basically *#Slack + #MicrosoftTeams, but worse*…

Some 5 years ago, I decided to finally #degoogle, #demeta and #demicrosoft my life.

As I'm a longstanding believer in #foss, I then went a step further and replaced as many proprietary apps and services as possible with #opensource and #libre equivalents.

Even though #Mozilla owned #Pocket already by then, the fact that it wasn't (fully) open source meant it had to go too. Some research led me to @wallabag, and I've not looked back since.

Sadly, the various articles recommending alternatives to Pocket that have popped up since its demise, make little to no mention of #Wallabag.

It's the *perfect* replacement: it's open source, you can #selfhost, it offers both #Android and #iOS apps, as well as a web client, and for those looking for a hosted service it's *by far* the cheapest option out there at just €11 a year.

For those #selfhosting, please consider supporting this great project by donating at least €11 a year, the cost of an annual hosted subscription.

I stopped using Google services a while ago.

I’ve written in the past about my #GoodbyeGoogle story. All part of me trying to leaving Big Tech behind.

I’m getting there.

I have a domain through which I run my own instance of Nextcloud, to replace Google Drive.

The other domain I set up to use for email and other services (albeit it’s via Apple).

In fact, apart from YouTube, my Google account is unused for anything else.

So, why have I received an email from Google advising me to verify my own domain as my recovery email?
How is Google even aware of this?

Rhetorical question, I suppose!

Here is my current tech stack:

* Storage - #Nextcloud
* Photos - Apple Photos
* Email - My own domain (currently via Apple Mail)
* Maps - Apple Maps
* Browser - #Vivaldi (MacBook) #quichebrowser (iPhone and iPad)
* Search - #DuckDuckGo
* Social Media - #GoToSocial

I keep my domains and DNS at a separate place, so I can switch my domains around between VPSes if needed. That approach has served me well since many years. Little Linux VPSes can do a lot, even with just 1 vCPU and 2GB of RAM (that's the specs of my mailserver that manages e-mail for 23 domains) 4/5

So typically once a year I go through the offerings out there to see if I can get a better solution. Moving the content/setup around is simple for me, so I am always free to move. That's my digital sovereignty. A roaming Linuxer that goes from town to town ;) 5/5

Here's what I want from a VPS:

- KVM based (no VMware, Virtuozzo please)
- Unmetered network traffic
- Ability to mount ISO images and install in text or graphic mode via a console
- Real IPv4 address with configurable reverse lookup

Performance wise everything from 2-4 vCPUs, 2-8GB of RAM and at least 50GB of storage. These VPSes come at around 3-9€/month. 3/5

Especially if they offer that "can mount ISO images" seems to be quite hard to find out at Hetzner, Strato, Hosting, Ionos etc. I know it's a geek feature, but it shouldn't take me hours going through knowledge bases to find out if they do or do not offer this. 2/5
