This is a really good fake email. Sender is spoofing my own Outlook-based email address (from and to addresses are identical). I don't know much, but the headers seem to show it coming from Outlook.com too, except for a non-existent domain name and a Russian IP address. It ended up in the spam folder (on Outlook) but I'm surprised that it was even processed. It's an older "I've installed Pegasus, send me Litecoin" scam but usually the email address fails to match the header. #spam #email #scam

Ooh! A #fediverse enabled "#newsletter platform"!

I had a newsletter, once upon a time.

But not no more.

I felt uncomfortable possessing a list of #email addresses, and guilty for spamming the list once a month (I don't believe I missed a month, while I maintained the list).

Then, one day, the light dawned.

I realised that I could just as easily post my "news" to my own #Website, and let those who want to read it, read it there.

And I thought to myself: "Why hasn't anyone else ever (EVAR!1!) had such a radical, liberating, privacy-maintaining idea before me???"

(Hey, reply-guys: I know the answer; it's OK, you don't need to inform me that the #datamining was the whole point.)

@ckrypto if@signalapp@mastodon.world wasn't complying with #CloudAct, @Mer__edith would be in jail.

Not to mention even if Signal keeps their "#OpenSource" code updated - which is doubtful, NOONE can actually #verify that it's the code you actually use - regardless if #backend / #Server or #client / #App!

  • #Signal is as secure as #ANØM, otherwise it would've been shutdown ages ago.

Also if Signal was designed for #security, it would've been #decentralized as #XMPP+#OMEMO and not demand #PII like #PhoneNumbers which oftentimes cannot be obtained anonymously in many juristictions at all!

By comparison, @delta doesn't require any PII, only an #eMail account, and @monocles isn't a #VCmoneyBurningParty but sustainable due to #subscription and they don't even require any personal details for #payment: #CashByMail and #Monero are accepted.

Again: It's Signal alone who have to evidence they are trustworthy, and all I get are "#TrustMeBro!" replies, which means they are not to be trusted.

  • Not to mention, it's just not sustainable to run a #service without #revenue, even if it's run entirely by unpaid volunteers and gets all it's #hosting and #costs donated, someone has to pay for expenses due to #abuse of a service (which is an inevitability come mass adoption)...

Whereas with #XMPP I can completely setup my own server and client, even build my own if I don't trust anyone else and pay someone to audit the code.

Whereas with XMPP & PGP/MIME #eMail I can layer @torproject / #Tor over it, make it an #OnionService and keep that thing under my bed with a literal killswitch...

After much waffling and mucking, I finally have a functional mail server.

Still a few more things to finish up, but it's coming along. Even with #RYOMS, it can be quite the process. I tried testing out some of the AIO solutions, but kept running into trouble with those as well. Between the book and the LinuxBabe tutorials, things have been working well, if a bit time consuming.

I thought I had seen it all when it comes to mail delivery and security issues.

But this morning I was introduced to the fact that there are Exchange admins who will implement a rule that all incoming mail from outside their own organization should be flagged as potentially dangerous and presented to the user with the option to block sender and no option to mark the message or the sender as valid.

Yes, that for every single message.

I wonder how many Ukrainians today would still host their email with Yandex, a Russian email provider? No doubt you would laugh: no Ukranian in their right mind would do that, considering Russia's behaviour, that's all over the news.

Now as a thought exercise: I wonder how many Canadians still think nothing of hosting their email with, say, Gmail or Hotmail? Is there any parallel there, considering the open language around annexing Canada? Might it be time to consider an #email migration to some other provider, not hosted on the soil of a country who wishes to annex yours?

When it comes to digital sovereignty and building alternatives we’re going to need to think smarter, not harder. For example, instead of building another email server we could design a better service altogether. There has to be a more secure and efficient way to send asynchronous messages to colleagues. Email as a service hasn’t innovated since 2005 and if anything has gotten worse. #digitalsovereignty #email #bigtech

What was your reason for choosing us?

I’ve let my MS Office expire which means I’m hunting about for a new #email client for my PC. I need one that can handle multiple emails and isn’t run by robber barons. It also needs to work with overwhelmed brains (neurodivergent friendly) Any suggestions?

I’ve downloaded trials for Mailbird and Mailspring so far.
