Is it the norm these days for a small college #library not to allow unaffiliated visitors? Maybe I’m old, but I remember when anyone could enter a college library and read, but you had to be a student or faculty member to check out books. Is this policy a consequence of COVID? Or a security concern? I’ve encountered it twice now, and I find it strange and unfriendly. #AcademicLibraries

I worked as staff in an academic library and year by year since 2000 I saw firsthand general critical thinking skills decreasing. More and more book smarts, rote smarts, but less and less on-the-fly smarts is the best way I can explain it. They weren't dumber, even smarter in specialized areas, and that seemed to be the problem. Not enough general humanities education to develop empathy or understanding when things didn't go their way.

Our title "Building Representative Community Archives: Inclusive Strategies in Practice" is now ready to ship! Showcasing a range of projects aimed at increasing the diversity of representation in archives, the practical examples in this collection will assist librarians & archivists in their own work to document, preserve, and create access to history. alastore.ala.org/brca

Academic librarians, do any of y'all know if there are any recommended pay rates for librarians who teach their own courses (i.e. are instructors of record)? Or is it typically tied to an institution's lecturer/per class rate? I can't seem to find any decent documentation on this and am curious whether the profession has established a minimum threshold that librarians can use to negotiate a better pay rate.

Hi ausglam & fediverse! By way of #introduction, I'm a nerdy librarian in Naarm/Melbourne, living on stolen Wurundjeri land.

I mostly work in #academiclibraries, but I've also held teaching and research roles in literary and cultural studies (science fiction, utopian studies, and book history are my jam). My current work focuses on #openaccess and scholarly comms.

I'm an avid #knitter, and I enjoy audiobooks, podcasts, a good TV series, boardgames, and videogames. Expect photos of my cats 😆

Howdy y'all. I've migrated to a new server, so re-posting my #introduction:

I'm the #DigitalHumanities librarian at San Diego State. Originally a U.S. historian (working on gender in musical films) my current interests focus on ethical tech, digital pedagogy, digital storytelling & DH/digital scholarship spaces. Still trying to get the hang of this whole distributed network thing. Expect to see a lot of pics of my #DogsOfMastodon
