To help preserve her works, Cindy Sherman is offering to destroy and reprint old photographs

"If a print is deemed eligible, the original—accompanied by its title, edition number, date and provenance—will be destroyed and replaced with a mint-condition, artist-signed reprint."

Travel through time and text with our new online exhibition, inspired by a 1545 edition of #Theocritus’ Idylls.

From #ancient #Sicily to #Animal Crossing, explore how the romantic vision of #rural life - born in #Greek verse - has echoed through centuries of #literature, #art, and #PopCulture. 🌾📖

Student Lou Kapsimali @facultyofartsgroningen @facultyofartsug.bsky.social developed the exhibition at our #SpecialCollections dept.

A classic stored in our #SpecialCollections vault:

This fluffy tail belongs to "Het Grote Boek van De Poezenkrant - The Big Book of the Cat Newspaper". The tail is a bookmark.

De Poezenkrant was a #Dutch #magazine with articles and #illustrations of domestic cats, but it was actually more of a typographical playground for its designer, Piet Schreuders.

This book compiles issues from 1974–2004. After 50 years, the magazine stopped publishing in November 2023.

The first artists and printers to call themselves “designers” advertised their work in the mid- to late 19th century. Their printed ephemera brought color and design innovation to the masses. Soon, thanks in part to a generous donation from collector Richard Sheaff, thousands of fine examples of this blossoming graphic design will join Letterform Archive.

If you are a Special Collections librarian or user, I’d be curious to see what your library opted for to store medieval fragments and how it is working out. For example, I worked with fragments fitted in melinex a lot and the shine it produced made it impossible to see details - or take pictures. Conservation specialists are wizards and I really admire their original approaches to this stubborn material. #libraries #SpecialCollections #MedievalFragments #Conservation #MedievalFragments

Interesting meeting later today: helping #UBC Special Collections figure out how to mount our medieval fragments. Fit them in cardboard frames, in melinex?

Hard to find good solution for single leaves and smaller strips with odd shapes. UBC has a teaching collection so the materials are frequently used by students: solution must be sturdy and show both sides.
