Sometimes Synology Drive Client just stops synchronizing files down from the server without telling you that there's anything wrong. This is bad.

Wanted to try get an upstream Linux kernel booting on a #Synology DS118 (#Realtek RTD1296 SoC), but not having much luck. Not even seeing any earlycon output so far. 
Some patches for a DS418 (very similar board) seem to have made it upstream, but I wonder if platform support is just incomplete or something.

Eine Möglichkeit zur Unabhängigkeit von der erratischen USA ist, die Daten zu Hause zu speichern, auf einem NAS. Davon möchte auch NAS-Hersteller #Synology profitieren. Einige der Funktionen sollen zukünftig nur noch mit von ihm gebrandeten Festplatten möglich sein. Aber dafür gibt es keinen technischen Grund, denn alte Platten funktionieren weiterhin.

Future Synology storage systems will require Synology branded mass storage.
I’ve never been a fan of these Taiwanese storage systems simply because file systems and redundancy technology could not be ascertained pre-sale.

I guess it was wise decision to merge servers and dedicate my old gaming PC to become my NAS and Plex server, replacing my aging Synology and NUC systems later this year:

As it also affects my plan which services to use in the mid-term ... #Synology just added Photo and Data sync to the list.
But I also discovered, that #Immich is also available in #Yunohost! Or just another reason to buy a new #RaspberryPi ?
If Synology institutes hard drive lock-in, I'll have to finally move off the platform.
Does anyone have thoughts on power-efficient, middle of the line hardware for a small form factor server?
That or it's time to get a ridiculously large rack and turn my hobby into a sickness.

It's shameful how #Synology decided to take HP's path (and among other printers companies).
Somehow, their "proprietary hard drives" are "more trustworthy", or that is more "secure" or whatever...
In the excellent article, @kevinpurdy also wrote that "Synology does not manufacture its own hard drives but instead certifies and rebrands drives from Toshiba and Seagate (...)"
I think that would be an interesting topic for @pluralistic
@arstechnica I recommend #asustor nas. Asustor not only allow whatever drives you prefer, but also allow you flash a different OS from the one they provide(and recommend). Something that #synology has already rendered virtualy impossible to do
#asustor is non-usa, non-chinese but from #taiwan btw. Also something one may want to take into account these days.

Ich habe da mal etwas für #FragDasFediverse.
Da meine #Synology DS710+ inzwischen auch schon 12 Jahre oder mehr auf dem Buckel hat, mache ich mir langsam Gedanken über eine mögliche Nachfolge. Ich nutze mein #NAS hauptsächlich für Urlaubsvideos und Urlaubsfotos.
Dabei überlege ich mir, ob ich mir wieder eine Synology hole oder u. U. ein #Qnap Gerät. Die Frage ist nur, ob ein Qnap wesentliche Vorteile gegenüber einer Synology mitbringt oder ober dass Jacke wie Hose ist?
Ebenso schwirren mir Gedanken über ein Selbstbau-NAS im Kopf herum. Es gibt da ja #TrueNAS und #Openmediavault. Welche Vor- bzw. Nachteile haben die beiden genannten Lösungen gegenüber? Gibt es noch andere Softwarelösungen? Wäre für so etwas ein #RaspberryPi bzgl. Leistung ausreichend?
Was mir noch wichtig wäre, dass man mit diesem NAS auch so etwas wie #SabNZBD, #Nextcloud o. ä. installieren und nutzen kann. Ob dies dann über #Docker oder einer anderen Lösung genutzt wird, ist mir jetzt erst einmal egal.
Was ist mir noch wichtig:
- Der Stromverbrauch sollte sich in Grenzen halten
- Die Installation und Wartung sollte keine 87 Semester IT-Studium benötigen
- Was spricht für eine Selbstbau-Lösung, was dagegen?
- Habe ich bei meinen Überlegungen etwas übersehen?
So, #Synology is officially OFF my list for ANY new #NAS units in the future! 
I will NOT buy a NAS that ONLY allows THIER OWN DRIVES to be used in their units!

Hey folks, my cranky old #Synology #NAS is getting full and I'm thinking about upgrades. I don't think I want to buy another commercial NAS and I have an AM5 motherboard doing literally nothing. Sny opinions on #unraid vs #truenas ? (I mostly use for #plex streaming and local backups) but may consider moving my #HomeAssistant install to the box too in the future). #homelab
