Anyone successfully taken apart a Dell Power Edge and moved all the components to a different case?
We are wondering if it makes more sense to rebuild the Dell or start over (and if so, how?).
If we start over, we'll add a graphics card but we do have the Dell, so we'd prefer continuing to use it instead of figuring out what components to spend money on.
Those finished solutions aren't the right choice for us.

Ich habe da mal etwas für #FragDasFediverse.
Da meine #Synology DS710+ inzwischen auch schon 12 Jahre oder mehr auf dem Buckel hat, mache ich mir langsam Gedanken über eine mögliche Nachfolge. Ich nutze mein #NAS hauptsächlich für Urlaubsvideos und Urlaubsfotos.
Dabei überlege ich mir, ob ich mir wieder eine Synology hole oder u. U. ein #Qnap Gerät. Die Frage ist nur, ob ein Qnap wesentliche Vorteile gegenüber einer Synology mitbringt oder ober dass Jacke wie Hose ist?
Ebenso schwirren mir Gedanken über ein Selbstbau-NAS im Kopf herum. Es gibt da ja #TrueNAS und #Openmediavault. Welche Vor- bzw. Nachteile haben die beiden genannten Lösungen gegenüber? Gibt es noch andere Softwarelösungen? Wäre für so etwas ein #RaspberryPi bzgl. Leistung ausreichend?
Was mir noch wichtig wäre, dass man mit diesem NAS auch so etwas wie #SabNZBD, #Nextcloud o. ä. installieren und nutzen kann. Ob dies dann über #Docker oder einer anderen Lösung genutzt wird, ist mir jetzt erst einmal egal.
Was ist mir noch wichtig:
- Der Stromverbrauch sollte sich in Grenzen halten
- Die Installation und Wartung sollte keine 87 Semester IT-Studium benötigen
- Was spricht für eine Selbstbau-Lösung, was dagegen?
- Habe ich bei meinen Überlegungen etwas übersehen?
Getting Nextcloud working on TrueNAS Scale was a bit of work and probably deserves a blog post but I'm busy poking it to see if anything breaks first!
I wrote a blog post about RAM because I am procrastinating doing actual work and now I need to go have lunch so work later I guess...
Memory tests work fine on the two 8GB RAM sticks, tried to add in the 4GB sticks and no booty... I'll try running on just the 16GB for a while.
I'm not quite sure how to test RAM on a TrueNAS install... I can't install memtester or anything... should I just boot using a different distro on a thumb drive?
After a re-setup of my #homelab server with #truenas I finally have #nextcloud up and running again.
In the past I used Nextcloud Photos to backup my phone but now moved to #immich. Now finally can also move all my #googlephotos to my private cloud 
Just triggered the export of the photos ;-)
Again one small stepp away from google and co!
I bumped up the RAM in my TrueNAS build from 12GB to 28GB. I went with the cheap ram which supposedly is seconds from well known brand name RAM manufacturers that just fail at least one of the final tests they use.
(And don't worry about those degraded pools! This is still a test install, not final.)
Hey folks, my cranky old #Synology #NAS is getting full and I'm thinking about upgrades. I don't think I want to buy another commercial NAS and I have an AM5 motherboard doing literally nothing. Sny opinions on #unraid vs #truenas ? (I mostly use for #plex streaming and local backups) but may consider moving my #HomeAssistant install to the box too in the future). #homelab
In an effort to understand TrueNAS a bit more I've done a lot of weird stuff in testing it... I made a pool with three drives, pulled out one of the drives, waited a week, plugged it back in, but via USB, and it looks like the system is doing the right thing.
Who knows? At some point I may actually build a usable system!

As a former sysadmin, I just had to replace a home NAS #truenas disk with a serial Number "WDH07B6X".
A WD prefix? That's a Western Digital drive.... right?
Nope.... Some schmuck in 2016 at Seagate is now having a laugh at my expense, having started serial numbers with a WD prefix back in 2016.
Making progress on my TrueNAS build using an old HP Z420 Workstation... I fixed some things but still have a lot to do!
Yay! I finally got 6 drives connected to the HP Z420 for my TrueNAS build. Seems there are extra SATA ports on the motherboard that are not used or something? I found the two "hidden" ones and got all the drives to show up.
This was a pain but I am past it now and can move on to getting all drives into place.
I believe I've got four 4TB drives to stick into it, just debating if I should make one a spare right away or not. I could use an old 6TB drive as the spare.
Ah, I just have the Data VDEVs but nothing for the other stuff... not sure how important those are.
