As Alan Shipman (OpenU) points out, in the end the UK economic malaise really centres on one problem - the inability to raise productivity.
Among the causes:
ineffective Govt. industrial policy (focussed as it is on financial services);
rubbish management (which I've posted on before) & unwillingness to invest in workers' skills or wellbeing;
oligopolies stifling competition alongside hopeless (captured) regulators;
inequality of 'rewards'.
I was very productive today. I cleaned and swiffered the living room, I vacuumed the stairs and my bedroom, I made an apple crisp, and made some pasta with sauteed onions, mushrooms, and broccoli. Gluten free of course. I also did laundry.
Sometimes I just sit around and watch the internet but today I didn't turn on the TV til a moment ago. I'm watching a replay of today's Mets pre-season game.
The code you write makes you a programmer. The code you delete makes you a good one. The code you don't have to write makes you a great one.

Given Rachel Reeves dependence on Office of Budget Responsibility's forecasts for keeping to her fiscal rules, as Chris Giles (FT) notes we may soon see a crisis when the OBR finally admits its always optimistic projections for productivity growth just aren't being met & therefore will need to be revised (radically) downwards.... which will negatively impact projections for growth & tax receipts, further diminishing any projected fiscal 'headroom'.
A crisis foretold?
That’s it. I simply cannot use @zenbrowser for work.
My battery drains faster than a truck burning fuel. My CPU goes crazy. Bugs break the little concentration I have.
This is mainly a lesson to myself: do not use beta software unless you are truly and fully committed to address the potential consequences.
Going back to vanilla #Firefox, hopefully switching to @librewolf as soon as I have some time to get it up and running.
Good morning , friends
It’s a middle of the week. It’s a good time for a bit of reflection:
- How do you feel about your week?
- How is it going?
I’m greatful for a good start of lamabot.io promotion. We’ve already had more than 100 visitors and about 10 new users after a week.

Productivity - an anecdote.
Conversation in office, many many moons ago.
"Staff: here is a thing we can do, will save 3 people about an hour each each week, likely a bit better once bedded in. Call it a productivity improvement of about 3%"
"Manager: it's not."
"Sure it is, see 1 over 40 is..."
"I get the math. But does it let us reduce head count?"
"Well, no. But it frees up time for additional...."
"Unless there is a reduction in payroll then it's not a saving. And if there's no saving then there's no productivity improvement."
"but incremental change ie continuous improvement is one of the business's..."
"It's not an improvement. No reduction in head count, no savings."
So if you're wondering where year on year productivity improvements went, here's one.

Huge win. Huge. Canadian Court upholds government restricting crypto bullshit use of electricity
"B.C. wins case for power use limits by cryptocurrency miners"
(Its not "mining" its wanking, nothing produced, nothing mined)
"The decision upheld an earlier court ruling against Conifex Timber Ltd., a forestry company located in Prince George .... The company was seeking unrestricted access to B.C. electricity."

"But in an update... #OPM removed wording describing responses as “explicitly voluntary.” The new PIA states, “The consequences for failure to provide the requested #information will vary depending on the particular #email at issue.” #DonaldTrump has also said that federal employees who do not respond could lose their #jobs."
Ok I actually remembered to do interstitial journaling today and it wasn't too bad. It was actually kinda relaxing? That it somehow forced my brain to not wander off and stare at cats (and 帅哥*) on xiaohongshu too much.

In the latest episode of our podcast, Harry and I discuss strategic prioritization. Day-to-day actions must serve higher-level goals. Both need prioritizing. In this conversation, we explore the relationship between both levels of priorities. Check it out.

Okay THIS is the new design I've been working on. I'll post the concepts later today.
Really happy to show this off regardless

Tip of the day: There is a flood of information and news available to us every day, making it hard to stay up to date. With so many sites to browse, it’s easy to miss some in the process. #RSS is a convenient way to get articles from websites delivered in an organized and clearly presented way. #DEVONthink supports #RSS and can be used as a reader. Here’s how that works. #pkm #productivity #tipoftheday #workflow https://www.devontechnologies.com/blog/20221005-rss-devonthink
