MarkG<p>A friend of mine texted me about the Shein app (Shein being a clothing store). He suspects there's AI in the app that uses the phone's camera to detect who's checking it out. So, when his 11 year old daughter uses it, it sends her pictures of pricey stuff (IE, $33 T-shirts). When he uses it, it sends pictures of cute but cheap things.</p><p>Targeted advertising.</p><p>Now, I have neither the app nor even Google Play Store on my phone. I use LineageOS &amp; F-Droid apps. Different Than<p>Anyone know about this app, called Dust? (Note: I don't think it's the secure messaging app). It's apparently for regional burns (mini-Burning Man events). A burn I'm attending is going to do all their organizing, messaging, mapping, etc. using the Dust app.</p><p>I fucking hate apps. I mean, some are okay. I hate everything in the world shoving an app at you, mostly because nearly every such app requires a significant chunk of personal data, then needs permissions it shouldn't have, and almost certainly resells my data or keeps it just in case the company needs extra cash.</p><p>So... how do I find this stuff out? It's not a major app; maybe a few thousand or tens of thousands of people ever use it, so I'm not finding any info about it by online searching. Dave Rahardja<p>As more and more apps turn into websites, I find myself missing the “app” as a unit of execution on my computer. I don’t like having random websites lurking in random tabs and windows within a single browser, because it makes it hard to find them, switch between them, close all sessions from a website, and keep their login contexts separate.</p><p>I find myself turning more and more websites into “web apps”, which not only turns certain web domains into things that look like apps, complete with app icon, it also *isolates their session storage* so that each “web app” acts like its own private browsing session. Although it’s still possible to leak information by clicking links and launching ID-encrusted URLs that open in other web apps (or the browser), the risk is much smaller.
