I'm automating stuff at the family farm using #homeassistant ; lights, smoke alarms, stove fire preventers, heaters.

It's inspiring to see so many iot devices support #ZigBee but also infuriating that 50% of the ones I've encountered has something fucky with their zigbee implementation. It's also somewhat concerning that the mains-connected zb router devices I've found will drop off immediately when the power goes out. The thought of not getting alerts about a fire in the barn if the power's out, concerns me.

I've got my eye on #matter , but I can't find compatible smoke alarms in Norway (so I can be confident they comply with local regulations, and return them if they're bad), and only limited reviews of ones available from abroad.

I see there's matteralpha.com/category/smoke and community.home-assistant.io/t/ but idk.

Can anyone recommend a mains-powered zigbee router device with a built-in battery, that'll keep it routing for at least 1 hour if it loses power?

Alternatively, a small (max 20*10*10cm) #ups that'll power a zb router or other tiny device for 1 hour? #NUT #networkUpsTools compatibility is a big plus

Observation of charge-parity symmetry breaking in baryon decays: arxiv.org/abs/2503.16954 -> Why is there more #matter than antimatter? CERN result offers tantalizing new clue: nature.com/articles/d41586-025 - physicists have spotted a difference in the way matter and antimatter baryons decay, which could help to explain a major cosmic mystery.

arXiv.orgObservation of charge-parity symmetry breaking in baryon decaysThe Standard Model of particle physics, the theory of particles and interactions at the smallest scale, predicts that matter and antimatter interact differently due to violation of the combined symmetry of charge conjugation ($C$) and parity ($P$). Charge conjugation transforms particles into their antimatter particles, while the parity transformation inverts spatial coordinates. This prediction applies to both mesons, which consist of a quark and an antiquark, and baryons, which are composed of three quarks. However, despite having been discovered in various meson decays, $CP$ violation has yet to be observed in baryons, the type of matter that makes up the observable Universe. This article reports a study of the decay of the beauty baryon $Λ^{0}_{b}$ to the $p K^{-} π^{+}π^{-}$ final state and its $CP$-conjugated process, using data collected by the LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment at CERN. The results reveal significant asymmetries between the decay rates of the $Λ^{0}_{b}$ baryon and its $CP$-conjugated antibaryon, marking the first observation of $CP$ violation in baryon decays, thus demonstrating the different behaviour of baryons and antibaryons. In the Standard Model, $CP$ violation arises from the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism, while new forces or particles beyond the Standard Model could provide additional contributions. This discovery opens a new path to search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

@missphant I have 7 devices connected via #Matter over WiFi to a #HomeAssistant instance. They are happily working fine alongside each other and playing nicely with #Zigbee devices and others. Seems pretty solid, and unlike other devices I’ve had in the past, they are not constantly phoning home (like my light dimmers). I use #PiHole as well as a firewall to lock things down, e.g., by keeping the chatty light dimmers on their own isolated subnet.

#Microsoft now says it has created a new state of #matter in its quest to make a powerful machine, called a #quantum #computer, that could accelerate the development of everything from #batteries to #medicines to #AI.

On Wednesday, Microsoft’s scientists said they had built what is known as a “topological qubit” based on this new phase of physical existence, which could be harnessed to solve mathematical, scientific & technological problems.

Another random #electronics #homeassistant #homeautomation thought:

Manufacturers are not moving very quickly on #thread #matter enabled #IoT sensors. It would be great if someone like @azonenberg or @gsuberland or someone could be nerdsniped into building a reference board or #crowdsupply which has footprint for all the usual sensors like #CO2, #VOC, #temperature, #humidity, etc. With provisions for both battery power and USB-C.

I'd happily buy a bunch of #privacy respecting crowdsupply ones.

The discovery of new phases of matter, like quasicrystals and time crystals, has expanded our understanding of what matter can be. These findings reveal that the states of matter go beyond solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas, hinting at more exotic forms yet to be found. What other phases or properties await discovery? The possibilities could redefine material science and challenge current theories, leading to advancements in technology and quantum systems. #Physics #Matter #Discovery
