#seismic

I've been watching a lot of walks these days, and I've noticed many rock walls in Kobe are built with the rocks placed on their points/diagonally and I'm wondering if it's strictly a local aesthetic or if there is a benefit in seismic activity for building them like that. It seems that they would flex more like woven fabric that way, but also maybe lock in tighter than flat laid stone, but I don't know enough about structural engineering when it comes to seismic. Anyone have any insight?

After a month of increased #seismic activity in #Ethiopia, rumours of a #volcanic #eruption spread. From videos (eg links below) it is clear that heat is close to the surface, leading to boiling mud and steam appearing and a #mud #volcano, comparable to eg. Icelandic sites. No real #volcano with erupting #lava. Yet?

40 years ago today I started my first trip to sea on a UK research vessel when RRS Discovery III departed from Falmouth to begin trials of the research council's new multichannel #seismic streamer and first digital seismic recording system. My first
#Antarctic cruise followed-on directly.
In terms of progress towards the Antarctic, this was a false start, as the ship returned to Falmouth three days later for a scheduled exchange of personnel before continuing the trials on transit to Gibraltar.

The Natural Environment Research Council had just acquired its first multichannel
#seismic
recording system and 2.4 km-long hydrophone streamer, and trials of this were to be conducted on the first stage of the transit South from Falmouth to Gibraltar.

#Japan Watchdog Deals Blow to #Tsuruga #Nuclear Restart Plan

Decision is a blow for operator that wants to restart the unit

It is a setback for the government looking to revive nuclear

By Shoko Oda
July 26, 2024

TOKYO (Reuters) - "A panel of Japan’s #nuclear watchdog decided on Friday against restarting a reactor at the Tsuruga #NuclearPowerPlant citing #seismic risks, paving the way for the regulator to keep the Japan Atomic Power plant shut.

"The panel said it was difficult to determine the safety of the reactor, noting the proximity of a seismic faultline.

"Consequently, it said, the reactor was not deemed compliant with criteria for installation licensing.

"'We will conduct an additional investigation. We are not considering decommissioning the plant,' Mamoru Muramatsu, president of Japan Atomic Power, said after the panel meeting, according to Kyodo News Agency.

"The government in Japan, one of the world’s most #seismically active countries, does not allow nuclear plants to be situated over active #faultlines.

"The panel is set to report its decision to the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) soon.

"If approved, this would be the first case of non-compliance under the stricter safety standards imposed after the 2011 #Fukushima nuclear disaster."

No, I didn't feel it. Yes, everyone else did. I'm sensitive to my environment, but ... I fidget, a lot, in my swivel chair while working.

A colleague was at my door asking if I was okay and the NJ colleague I was phone-meeting with at the time was getting a good shaking. I was like, whaaa?

Noticeable earthquakes in Eastern Canada are rare, but can be very large. See earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/ for maps identifying areas with higher seismic hazard.
