Anyone here got a CASIO CP400 or CP400+E (ClassPad II)? Or CG500 too, since that’s just the same calculator on a different enclosure.

It’d be really helpful if y’all could submit your calculators Serial Numbers to my.calcs.quest!
As well as do the Diagnostic1 key combo to figure out your ABS_Date (maybe add at ‘comments’?)

Specially if it was bought late 2022 or later (but older models, submit too!): Apparently there’s a new revision for the ClassPad (possibly for the cg500 too? haven’t seen that) that breaks compatibility with OSes older than 2.01.7, and hollyhock runs on 2.01.2. We’re trying to figure out what changes and how the SN works at Hollyhock-2 discord.
We know that affected calculators have an ABS_Date of 2022, while afaik all previous ones had an ABS_Date of 2012.

I have a CG500 bought in mid-2022, but it (thankfully) has the 2012 ABS_Date.

I've used a Casio fx-260 all my life. It's always done everything I need it to. My 2nd favorite gadget ever.

But saw this for 18 bucks today. I thought the all-white look was pretty easy on the eyes, easier to read than the dark look of the fx-260. Went ahead and got it.

Never had a calculator like this before. Going from the 260 to this feels like going from a Model T to a Space Shuttle.

I'll probably never use most of the stuff on here, but if I ever need it, it's there!

Good morning, friends. 🌹🌹🌹

When I was in high school, as I recall, we didn't have battery operated calculators. I'm not sure that they were a thing back then. Hmmm ... I need to look that up. ... Here's what I found out, the first battery operated portable calculator, the QT-8B was marketed by Sharp in mid-1970 (1). It was too large to be considered a pocket calculator and the cost was $495 (2), which is the equivalent of about $4K today. So, as you can imagine, we did all calculations by hand. There were slide rules and I suppose the abacus counts as well. There were mechanical calculators, and we were taught how to use them along with typewriters, in a Business Machines class.

"I am so old, I entered engineering school with a slide rule. And I left engineering school with a calculator. I can still use a slide rule but it's not a skill you especially need anymore". - Bill Nye

Quick Sunday repair: HP 48GX calculator

It belongs to a colleague and had the usual bad keyboard problem, which requires replacing a rubber strip. It keeps the keyboard membrane pressed onto the motherboard, and it gets loose over time.

It was a huge pain to take apart, but the result is rewarding 😀

@cstross some #TechIlliterate even recommended this shit to me instead if a #Laptop when I was in school.
I told them unless it comes with the same #TTS voice as #StevenHawking has I don't want them to ever be allowed to make any technical decision or suggestion in their life!
Those things are like #TexasInstruments #calculators: an absolute #ripoff given even the shittiest #Netbook with the abundant #Intel #Z3735F #SoC running #OS1337 is more versatile.
And I literally just started that distro.

I am glad to know who is responsible for these #math concepts I take for granted. I got my first #calculator in 7th grade. Our math #teacher warned us not to rely on #calculators because "Sometimes they're wrong!" One of my #CivilEngineering #professors used a #SlideRule to show the importance of understanding the quantities we're working with rather than blindly accepting the results from a #computer. One #typo can lead to disaster. I now have my own slide rule.

Hey lovely Mastodon folk. I've just released an HP-35, HP-45, HP-80 simulator called HP-1973 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the HP-45 calculator. (Free) standalone versions for Mac and WIndows (no need for any Python installation or knowledge) & Python source for Linux. It's been a coding marathon, so it'd mean a lot to me if you could boost this post, so it gets in front of the right people. Download here: sarahkmarr.com/retrohp1973.htm Enjoy. #retrocomputing #calculators #python #coding #rpn
