After looking for a long time, I finally found this #Sliderule, which belonged to my late father. Some of you will know that these #devices were used, before the advent of digital #Calculators, to perform #arithmetic operations such as #multiplication and #division to about three significant figures, by #scientists and #engineers.

Found in a thrift store. Hard to believe that people used to use this actual thing to do actual calculations to fly actual planes. #SlideRule #AnalogComputer #aviation
“It seems to me that every time those scientific laddies get busy with their slide rules life becomes more complicated. What was wrong with things the way they were?” —Robert Heinlein, Double Star, 1956
Predicting atomic rockets in the future, but not the electronic calculator or pocket computers.

Everything on my to-do list just got shifted down while I learn how this works. I can't wait for the printables! They'll be pinned on my bulletin board at work.

I am glad to know who is responsible for these #math concepts I take for granted. I got my first #calculator in 7th grade. Our math #teacher warned us not to rely on #calculators because "Sometimes they're wrong!" One of my #CivilEngineering #professors used a #SlideRule to show the importance of understanding the quantities we're working with rather than blindly accepting the results from a #computer. One #typo can lead to disaster. I now have my own slide rule.
Charity shop swag: a micrometer (with an inch-based scale), the Aristo MultiLog 970 (accept no substitutes) and Bletchley Park Top Trumps. Excellent. #retrocomputing #sliderule #engineering #computing
Just as an introductory post, here are a few interesting slide rules from my collection... #sliderule #sliderules

After hearing #sliderule legends from professors and colleagues I bought a K & E polyphase duplex slide rule to play with. It's awesome!
it took about a month for this to arrive and it's amazing
an aristo 0969 StudioLog #SlideRule in excellent condition
what caught me off guard was the size of it. this thing is a beast
I don't love plastic rules generally but there's a lot of precision here, and it has the perfect scale set: A, B, C, D, K, BI, CI, DI, folded and inverses, trig, LL0 through 3 and LL00 through 3, and a P!
