After looking for a long time, I finally found this #Sliderule, which belonged to my late father. Some of you will know that these #devices were used, before the advent of digital #Calculators, to perform #arithmetic operations such as #multiplication and #division to about three significant figures, by #scientists and #engineers.

This little mechanical calculator is one of my favorite objects. It came to me with what turned out to be a fouled 10s pin retaining ring; it was a bear to take apart, ‘machine’ a new part, and reassemble. But it works! And I love it!
I've used a Casio fx-260 all my life. It's always done everything I need it to. My 2nd favorite gadget ever.
But saw this for 18 bucks today. I thought the all-white look was pretty easy on the eyes, easier to read than the dark look of the fx-260. Went ahead and got it.
Never had a calculator like this before. Going from the 260 to this feels like going from a Model T to a Space Shuttle.
I'll probably never use most of the stuff on here, but if I ever need it, it's there!
The new toy next to the old toy. As far as I'm concerned, the best calculator ever made.
Bought the original in Kmart, that'll let you know how long I've had it.

Good morning, friends.

When I was in high school, as I recall, we didn't have battery operated calculators. I'm not sure that they were a thing back then. Hmmm ... I need to look that up. ... Here's what I found out, the first battery operated portable calculator, the QT-8B was marketed by Sharp in mid-1970 (1). It was too large to be considered a pocket calculator and the cost was $495 (2), which is the equivalent of about $4K today. So, as you can imagine, we did all calculations by hand. There were slide rules and I suppose the abacus counts as well. There were mechanical calculators, and we were taught how to use them along with typewriters, in a Business Machines class.
"I am so old, I entered engineering school with a slide rule. And I left engineering school with a calculator. I can still use a slide rule but it's not a skill you especially need anymore". - Bill Nye
Quick Sunday repair: HP 48GX calculator
It belongs to a colleague and had the usual bad keyboard problem, which requires replacing a rubber strip. It keeps the keyboard membrane pressed onto the motherboard, and it gets loose over time.
It was a huge pain to take apart, but the result is rewarding
@cstross some #TechIlliterate even recommended this shit to me instead if a #Laptop when I was in school.
I told them unless it comes with the same #TTS voice as #StevenHawking has I don't want them to ever be allowed to make any technical decision or suggestion in their life!
Those things are like #TexasInstruments #calculators: an absolute #ripoff given even the shittiest #Netbook with the abundant #Intel #Z3735F #SoC running #OS1337 is more versatile.
And I literally just started that distro.
I'm unreasonably proud of bringing this old calculator back to life. It had a fouled-up tens ring retaining pin that I had *sort* of fixed earlier this year. Now I've actually milled a new one and reassembled it. And it works! It is capable of more maths than I can math!
Whoever’s trying to offload this calculator has a future in tech sales.

I am glad to know who is responsible for these #math concepts I take for granted. I got my first #calculator in 7th grade. Our math #teacher warned us not to rely on #calculators because "Sometimes they're wrong!" One of my #CivilEngineering #professors used a #SlideRule to show the importance of understanding the quantities we're working with rather than blindly accepting the results from a #computer. One #typo can lead to disaster. I now have my own slide rule.
Plus, if you don't like the default colours, HP-1973 has seven included themes. Mastodon types might like "Litmus"... Download: https://sarahkmarr.com/retrohp1973.html #retrocomputing #calculators #python #coding #rpn
HP-1973 comes with an awful, awful lot of help. Like a _lot_. Really. Loads. Download: https://sarahkmarr.com/retrohp1973.html #retrocomputing #calculators #python #coding #rpn
Here are the various parts of the HP-1973 window. The ROM map, keyboard and list pane can all be independently hidden or shown. Download: https://sarahkmarr.com/retrohp1973.html #retrocomputing #calculators #python #coding #rpn
Hey lovely Mastodon folk. I've just released an HP-35, HP-45, HP-80 simulator called HP-1973 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the HP-45 calculator. (Free) standalone versions for Mac and WIndows (no need for any Python installation or knowledge) & Python source for Linux. It's been a coding marathon, so it'd mean a lot to me if you could boost this post, so it gets in front of the right people. Download here: https://sarahkmarr.com/retrohp1973.html Enjoy. #retrocomputing #calculators #python #coding #rpn
So. I know this is a long shot, but I'm hoping I might be able to find someone in the #Ottawa Metro areas willing to part with one or both of these #calculators... Both of which have been discontinued by #HewlettPackard
Well... I guess this must mean that I'm almost ready to launch a new (free) simulator of the HP-35, HP-45 and HP-80 calculators with multiple ROM choices, interactive ROM-code listings and decoding, full details of internal values and registers, on-screen keyboard, 1,000s of words of integrated help and explanations... Watch this space.

I'm 3,000 words into a description of the display decoding logic of the HP-35/HP-45/HP-80 calculators, for the help file of the new simulator I've written. Should be releasing it in the next couple of weeks. Here's a blurry preview, for enticement purposes.

Math teachers used to require expensive graphing calculators because they had advanced capabilities. Now we require expensive graphing calculators because they can't run photomath. The calculators are still expensive, though, for no reason at all.
