Has anyone read "Commodork: Sordid Tales from a BBS Junkie" && what is your opinion?

Holy shit!
TIL that the BBS software that I used to run is still in development and still in use!
Hey #GenX. Remember when calling a BBS in a nearby area code resulted in $100s in long distance charges - giving rise to carriers like Sprint & MCI?
I once called a #BBS in my own area code thinking it was local & my Dad got a $500 #longdistance bill.
I just saw this site dedicated to BBS games & OMG all the ANSI & 80 line text made me squeee with delight.

RocketChat is ne weitere okay Option...
Nach der gleichen Logik würden wir alle immernoch nur #Gopher, #BBS und #IRC nutzen!
On this day June 16th in 1987 the SDF-1 BBS received its first caller. Happy 38th to the https://sdf.org community!
Five GLORIOUS hours documenting the history of the ol' BBS days... from FIDO/PC Board to transfer protocols to ANSI art to PCTalk to Procomm & more!
(I also have a separate clip re: battle between PKZIP vs ARC!)

Saw that @amigalove tried to login and couldn't because he hadn't called in over 300 days :) I had the threshold set a bit lower than normal because at the time, we had maxed out our userbase of 999 users. Those days are gone I believe, and I've increased it to 2 years. That should help but you still gotta re-register @amigalove ... :) #bbs #commodore
There wasn't yet a right-click copy-and-paste mouse feature. Which can be disconcerting today, haha.
I still use it several times a week because I like browsing bulletin boards from MSDOS. And doing it from Windows 3.1 allows me to switch from MSDOS to Windows at any time to take notes, for example. Or play Zork, Nethack, etc..
Windows 3.1: launching it today (in 5s!), the essentials are still there! :0)
After 12 years, new official release of the Ice-T VT100 terminal emulator for #Atari8bit computers https://github.com/itaych/Ice-T #atari #bbs
"Put an Old-School BBS on Meshtastic Radio > Microsocial media comes to LoRa"
Wicked cool!
It’s a long weekend. Your #Atari 8-bit is ready to use. #Fujinet is connected, BobTerm is loaded up, and you call #SouthernAmis #BBS to relive the days of message bases, downloading warez, and connecting with other Atari A8 enthusiasts.
www.southernamis.com for all the how-to-connect details.
This is an advertisement to get you back on a BBS
ABBS was a popular #BBS server #software for #Commodore #Amiga which allowed you to host your own BBS. Development stopped and It was abandoned in 2000, but has now been revived. This is the first new release, now available for download.
addendum: I've found something more or less useful to do with the aforementioned setup. I'm still trying to iron out a few things, but it's amazing what a little overclocking can do.
I'm quite impressed at how responsive #NetBSD on the #RapberryPi Model 1 B (without the "plus" but with 512MB RAM - it's a rather early board manufactured in 12/2011) is.
So I decided to run #MagickaBBS on it, simply because it was the only #BBS software that I was able to compile on NetBSD - most other #bulletinboardsystem #software will not compile on #NetBSD (evbarm platform) for one or another reason - what a shame.
Anyway: about five years ago, I've had quite a creative burst and designed several #ANSI screens (example: see below) that I've never put into use. But this seems to be the right time to finally change that.
Stay tuned or follow: #netbsdonoldpi (NetBSD on old Pi) - I'll try to provide further updates in case you are interested ...
