@BenBen @fabiscafe @okapi @chesheer I don't deny this to be a problem, far from it.

  • In an ideal world, stuff would be portable enough that the underlying init (and Userland in general) as well as Kernel didn't matter and merely be a different config file.

In reality, a substantial part of #Gnome devs (or at least contributors) are paid by the 3 major #Linux distros (#RHEL, #SLED, #Ubuntu) and whilst not being antragonistic towards #BSD|s don't get employed to enshure it runs on #FreeBSD, but that it runs better on the distro their employer is selling

  • And given that these projects don't have infinite resources and espechally maintainers I don't blame them to redelegate a lot of work to #SystemD instead of reimplementing something themselves.

OFC it's saddening in regards to non-Linux #Unix-esque OSes, but given self-amplifying network effects both the murder of #OpenSolaris at the hands of #Oracle (with @EUCommission and #FTC as enablers!) and @iXsystems ditching #FreeBSD in #trueNAS alongside regressing #driver support for hardware outside of Linux, #macOS and #Windows, it's not a good time for these projects.

  • Which is bad because BSDs and other OSes force Linux to innovate and ' get gud '!

@davidgerard @cleverboi @RecurringBloatware @rdfhrn and because "installing another shell" is like "installing a compiler on a production system".

  • At least a gross violation of #BestPractises with regulations, if not a ticket to get a nonconsensual meeting with HR and security escorting one off premises...

So yeah, I've deal with #bash simply because it's the only #shell I can reliably expect on any relevant #Linux distro I'm working on (aka. #Ubuntu LTS, #SLES / #SLED, #RHEL, #Debian) ...

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)@cleverboi@mastodon.social @rdfhrn@hessen.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run I know... - If I could change it, I'd make the default shell of #Linux into #fish instead of #bash...

@ravirockks OFC they don't.

At best they show people how to change fan curves in the #UEFI or hiw to run #memtest86+, but mostly they just "teach" people how to consume #Windows and at best #macOS and that's it.

Same with @libreoffice / #LibreOffice & @thunderbird / #Thunderbird.

@mjdxp @efi @puppygirlhornypost2 personally, I'm glad that I only need #UbuntuLTS, but if I ever were to supoort #RHEL or #SLED / #SLES I'd just use my existing developer agreements which allow me to setup as many installs as I like for testing, development, support and evaluation pending I don't use them "in production" aka. run my business off them.

In terms of commercial distros I'd actually consider buying a subscription, #Ubuntu is the option I'd consider given it's entirely optional to get their commercial support and the only difference besides support are few addon features, and not entirely different distros that have vast differences between the "open" and "commercial" offerings in terms of underlying architecture.

  • But maybe it's just me being unwilling to pay 8x (#RedHat) or 4x (#SUSE) of what #Canonical demands for the same SLAs... [based off a real-life cost analysis for a fmr. employer/client]

@hgfernan @textovervideo well, the original poll asked about #2Danimation and both #MohoStudio and #ToonboomHarmony are the prime (abeit #CCSS and not #FLOSS) tools the industry uses.

That being said, a lot of people may be content with #Blender's options as something cheaper (aka. free as in FLOSS) with way more accessible #documentation, #community and support resources.

  • Anyway, it's sad to see both big players don't even support #RHEL or #SLED or #Ubuntu LTS Desktop...
FosstodonTOV (@textovervideo@fosstodon.org)Which 2D animation software do you think is better overall on Linux? #Linux #2D #animation #Glaxnimate #Pencil2D #Synfig #Friction [ ] Glaxnimate [ ] Pencil2D [ ] Synfig Studio [ ] Friction

@carlwgeorge @vermaden @samurro @tara @vkc @BrodieOnLinux

Cuz for #devs it was very convenient to target #CentOS and test against it since it's basically identical to #RHEL - minus the commercial support - which also drove adoption of #RedHat's distro.

  • Similar to how in many cases #OpenSUSE allowed most of the devs targeting #SLES & #SLED to get away not having to buy many machines and how the only.difference between #UbuntuLTS & #UbuntuPro are #Landscape, #ESM repos and getting 10years of paid per annum instead of 5 years free security updates.
