One of the nice things, and it's aesthetic, is use of 'λ' for an anonymous function in #racket. I...fucking...LOVE lambda calculus. Combinatory logic and lambda - seriously that should be all the math a compsci major should learn. I HATED calculus. I swore they just made it so much more complex to make themselves look smarter. I went down the CompBio track, and most things, like mRNA transcription,for example, are totally beta-reducible. Less time with the math shit with λ-calculus. #lisp

Racket folks: so I hear that Racket is good for making DSLs, and that it's a "programming language programming language".

For example, there's Scribble, for writing documents -- which I'd describe as "Racket's TeX": https://docs.racket-lang.org/scribble/

I want to learn a bit about this, and have an idea for a little DSL I'd like to make: it would describe hikes, walks, bike routes, etc -- any sort of 1-d path. It would describe waypoints, landmarks, elevation, directions, maybe alternate routes, and so on.

The neat thing would be "compilers" for such a DSL: imagine "compiling" such a hike/path into a regular map with the path...or an elevation profile...or a textual list of directions...or a GPX file.

#racket folks, what are some good resources for getting started? I'm poking around but would like to hear your thoughts.

This is fascinating! Programming language as a means of understanding Lacanian philosophy. This reinforces something I'm increasingly persuaded of, that computer science and programming languages exist not merely for computers but more importantly as a means of understanding how we think about how we think. This places comp sci squarely in the realm of epistemology, a branch of philosophy.

I was also a PhD (graduated August 2024) working on programming languages research (though I work in formal verification, brain too small ​​ to understand category theory)

I do a lot of #drawing (see my pfp!!!), like #anime and #manga, esp those with good trans representation + #yuri ofc (recss welcomeee!!). I also play video games, but I suck and my computer is a potat ​​ so can't play anything too intensive~ love indie gamess, rpgs esp!!!

Before my egg cracked, I guess I liked #programming and was obsessed with the #OCaml programming language? I even wrote my own #activitypub server in it~ (look up OCamlot!!), Nowadays I guess I like #Racket and #lisp, but tbh I don't do it much outside of work lol

I also do #gamedev on and off in my free time (the bg of my profile is a chara from a game I'm working on), but I've never finished a projectttt cause I keep on procrastinating tooo muchhh ​​
