📰 New news blog post: "Why Metadata Enrichment Matters for the Public Knowledge Project" by PKP Scientific Director and Collaborative Metadata Enrichment Taskforce (COMET) Co-Organizer Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander

Learn how and why PKP is deeply involved in efforts, such as COMET, to improve the completeness and accuracy of metadata:

For the publication metadata nerds: I tried to create clarity (ahum) by visualising the generation of various metadata and their flow through the scholarly publishing system. The links goes to the online version that is fully animated, as well as additional versions. Wonder if you think this is useful.

I personally cannot believe that nothing is done with the metadata trough Amazon in the US.

If people want to have more privacy against all gathering, maybe it would be better idea just to switch to Threema or Jabber using a private server?

@Cappyjax IDGAF about "passion". All I care about is the security of users!

Requiring any #PII like a #PhoneNumber is inacceptable when it comes to #ComSec, #InfoSec & #OpSec, espechally given @signalapp is not only able but entirely willing to restrict service based off said numbers, making their "solution" insecure by design.

  • There's a reason why #XMPP+#OMEMO and #PGP/MIME [both each over @torproject / #Tor] is the evidently superior and more secure approach, as being unable to "#KYC" a user is a matter of security...

Espechally since obtaining a phone number anonymously is oftentimes illegal (i.e. #Germany made it illegal starting 07/2017, so using any service that demands a phone numner is out of question)

  • And even if one can get an anonymous #SIM (with a phone number) or god forbid #eSIM, (which is at best pseudonymous as tracking down users by virtue of matching ICCID, IMEI & IMSI to location and time) the chances are high that one ends up with recycled phone numbers that have already been used.

Obviously the devs of #Signal and @Mer__edith are well aware of this critical flaw, which is why I consider them to act as "useful idiots" or rather "controlled opposition" as #Signal could've been shutdown trivially by the #US Government or forced into banning users based off their #PhoneNumbers (they may call this "#sanctions #compliance" given they added a #Shitcoin - Wallet into Signal!)...

  • All the "but #Metadata" #FUD turns into #MarketingLies once put under the looking glass and examined against the risk of state-sponsored / -endordsed / -supported attackers.

Whereas with @monocles / #monoclesChat, @gajim / #gajim and @delta / #deltaChat and @thunderbird / #Thunderbird respectably I can not only use Tor, but do #SelfHosting for the entire #communications infrastructure (i.e. using an #OnionService = only reachable via Tor) and get the advantages of a self-routing, self-authenticating & battle-hardened against censorship proxy network that can't be shutdown!

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)@renardboy@mastodon.social @derekmorr@mastodon.social depends... Did you have to remotely onboard someone onto a secure communication stack whilst they are on the run from the authorities *and* blood relatives due to *"living while trans"* with a *literal "dead or alive" bounty on their head* whilst stuck in a besieged city that's being shelled? - Cuz I did... @signalapp@mastodon.world is evidently a solution appealing to #TechIlliterates with *dangerous 'semi-knowledge'* who are willing to accept a *"#TrustMeBro!"* by @Mer__edith@mastodon.world and #MoxieMarlinspike before her. - Using #Signal would've gotten said person tracked down and killed by the de-facto aithorities for merely having their phone # linked to that shite!

With billions of images, #Flickr is a massive visual history collection—but it’s too big for any single #archive to preserve on its own. In this CNI session, learn how the glammr.us/@flickrfdn Data Lifeboat project tackles this challenge by bundling images and #metadata into preservation-friendly packages, focusing on content and context over standard web archiving: youtu.be/lCZq_Tv3wOE

Libraries have long collaborated and shared resources, but open metadata often lags behind. This CNI session explores how initiatives like IIIF, Blue Core, POD, and RIALTO challenge us to think critically about #metadata reuse.

The speakers discuss uncertainties caused by unclear licensing—and why open licenses drive library innovation. We also connect these efforts to the momentum of open science, open data, and new requirements for federally funded research: youtu.be/iExxGIhKJ4E

Let's take a look at another contribution of Johanna Elena Schmitz and Jens Zentgraf from the #SnakemakeHackathon2025

Snakemake users probably know that

`$ snakemake [args] --report`

will generate a self-contained HTML report. Including all plots and #metadata a researcher's heart longs for.

Now, why trigger this manually? If the workflow runs successfully, now we can write (or configure):

`$ snakemake [args] --report-after-run`

and Snakemake will autogenerate the same report.

ZenodoIdentification of core elements for a machine-actionable Data Management Plan metadata schema in the NFDIFrom 28 to 30 October 2024, ZB MED Information Centre for Life Sciences organized a hackathon in Cologne within the scope of NFDI4DataScience with the purpose of identifying core elements for a machine-actionable Data Managemnt Plan (maDMP) across the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). We used as starting/reference point the maDMP application profile from the Research Data Alliance DMP Commons Working Group. Here we report on the activities and findings. The dataset corresponding to crosswalks can be found at DOI:10.5281/zenodo.15129830 Abstract: The interoperability of data management plans (DMPs) across platforms and application profiles plays a key role in the implementation of good scientific practice and of the FAIR data principles. The application profile for "machine-actionable DMPs" published by the Research Data Alliance (RDA) marks an important step in this direction. More recently, networking initiatives such as the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) are collecting and generating templates for DMPs based on the needs of different subject-related communities and implemented in different DMP software tools. In a two-day hackathon we analyzed the RDA maDMP application profile, discussed the meaning and applicability of the proposed elements and aligned them to selected community-driven schemas and platforms for DMPs and for metadata. The results are available in the form of crosswalks and are intended to pave the way towards an maDMP based on schema.org to improve information exchange between DMP platforms and other research data services, and alignment between DMPs and Software Management Plans.
