Well, this is strange. Somebody just emailed me saying that they had found an old Chinese book and were wondering if it was valuable. The title is 網俠, or "Knight of the Nets", which I'd never heard of and can find no information on.

The thing is, it's not really text. The pages are filled with random characters in what looks like a square grid, but most of the squares are blank. Sometimes there are short sentences at the top of the page, often in the second person, like they're addressing the reader.

The scan I was sent is a bit hard to make out, so I copied some of the grid on paper. As best as I can tell, the accompanying sentence here says something like "you [honorific] hear the sound of water falling on coins of gold".

There is no information about the author, the publisher, or the year of publication, only a date of some sort on the first page: the first day of the fourth month.

Any ideas?

I just resurrected my old netbook (1 GB RAM! 250 GB space! 32 bit architecture!) and installed Bodhi Linux on it. I even got Wi-Fi to work!

I'm hoping to use it as a portable distraction-free typing machine. Also, nethack.

I also welcome opinions on what the best and easiest-to-install lightweight Linux distribution is.

It's my day off, but I'm babysitting a remote session by a vendor's support tech. So of course I'm playing #nethack. My only problem is I'm sshed into a Linux server from a Mac, and I can't figure out how to do send Meta key commands. The weird thing is, it's sending the Meta key, but it's changing the companion key. So M-f receives the error "Unknown command 'M-^R'. The thing that really bugs me is I think I used to know why this is, but I definitely don't anymore!

@b0rk speaking only for myself: PuTTY's default colours follow that CGA palette _except_ that colour 6 is dark yellow #AAAA00 instead of the anomalous brown #AA5500.

Rationale: not all terminals do bold by changing the colour. Some vary the font weight instead. Applications written for those will expect yellow to be yellow, whether it's bold or not.

But when playing #NetHack I used to send a palette-control sequence to go back to brown, because NH uses that colour for brown monsters!

@amigalove #NetHack isn't ported to the Amiga anymore, because no-one in the DevTeam uses Amiga these days, and no person outside the team volunteered to support the port.

There were few people who emailed us during 3.6 development wanting to maintain the Amiga port, but nothing ever came out of that.

report: I am not nearly knowledgeable enough to actually ascend even under the best of circumstances so I just threw myself at the game with reckless abandon to see what happens

I found a random amulet and put it on.

I discovered about two minutes later when my character resurrected at the feet of a giant spider that it was a priceless amulet of life saving. Which is astoundingly lucky.

But then I ate some tripe, got sick and died while fighting one (1) ant, so.
