Calling all analog film photographers! I've been working on Filmbook, an open-source app to help you keep track of your film usage. It's built with Rust & GTK4/libadwaita for a smooth & modern experience – and it even runs on Linux phones like the Librem 5 and Pinephone Pro!
The first version is ready for testing, and I'd love your input on what features would make it even better! Join the community & help shape Filmbook: https://codeberg.org/bjawebos/filmbook #filmphotography #analogphotography #rustlang #gtk #opensource #community #testing #featureideas #librem5 #pinephone #linuxphone
Yesterday the "Reflection" project started officially as part of the new @PrototypeFund round!
The team consists of @p2panda and people from the GNOME gang around @tbernard and @jsparber.
We gonna release "Reflection" (formerly Aardvark) - a GTK-based, collaborative, local-first text editor! Aaaand:
All of this is part of a larger effort to explore p2p code, UX patterns, reusable UI components, debugging tools, organize events and document our learnings.

Can GTK feel like React or SwiftUI? Let’s explore modern takes on building Linux UIs.
"Breaking the spell: how to fix GObject"

After 25 years of GObject, it’s time for a new direction.
So the conclusion is: If I want to improve what I'm using, I need to get my hands dirty and learn to write and fix that kind of software written in #GObject #C.
I'm happy there is @objfw as well which makes facing C less of a pain.
#ObjGTK probably will never be "finished", but it already helps using #GTK without me needing to learn #Rust, which I won't be able to achieve in my spare hours.
It's not that I'm a great fan of the #GObject type system and its way to build object-oriented code in C. I know some of the maintainers aren't as well, which I don't consider a surprise given the age and origin of that GObject ecosystem. So I absolutely understand #Canonical considered switching to #Qt for #Unity8, now #Lomiri.
But that's only one part of the story. The other part is I'm now using #GTK based desktop environments almost full time (only some occasions I turn on my old Mac).
Linux Mint forks GNOME’s Libadwaita to add theme support
On numerous occasions, we've talked about the issue facing non-GNOME GTK desktops, like Xfce, MATE, and Cinnamon: the popularity of Libadwaita. With more and more application developers opting for GNOME's Libadwaita because of the desktop environment's popularity, many popular GTK applications now look like GNOME applications

My problem was: the font in #GTK 4 apps (Firefox, #Gnome etc.) was suddenly unreadably large, while in GTK 3 apps (and KDE, and all others) it was the usual size.
Apparently the core of my problem was: some dpi setting in #Xorg defaults to 96 dpi; and even though xrandr showed the correct physical screen dimensions at 130 dpi, the output of xdpyinfo stayed at 96 dpi.
`xrandr --dpi 130` did the trick.
(Don't @ me about wayland. You don't understand my use case, and I will block you.)
Would any #windows #developer want to work on a funky #Gtk C++ bug?
The Inkscape project is empty of windows developers and needs some help fixing a fairly serious issue: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/5219
If I had a windows machine, I'd have tried to fix this one. But I'm completely at sea for this type of issue without the OS on hand. (don't try developing on a VM or old computer, Inkscape is too big and slow to build on windows for that)
Greetings Programs!! We're back at it again working towards @pidgin 3.0 Experimental 3! Come on by and see it happen!
I modified Adwaita to try make the four Windows 10/11 High Contrast themes in Linux. The window theme is for XFCE so far. Happy to hear feedback, I'm sure there are more bugs in a desktop theme than a cursor theme. Available on Open Desktop and my website.

phosh 0.47.0 is out :
This release is a bit smaller than the previous two as we spent more time on other parts of the #LinuxMobile stack but there's still some fixes and improvements, check out the full release
notes at https://phosh.mobi/releases/rel-0.47.0/ for details or see for a short
to everyone who contributed to this release.
Do you know what I did decades ago when Gnome removed easily configurable features? I just went to another Window / Desktop manager combination. I was playing with fvwm Enlightenment Black Box FluxBox & others before KDE & Gnome.
I compiled fvwm from sources way back in the beginning, when Linux had no x Windows at all, when we literally had to build everything from sources even use a disc editor to put magic bytes on the boot sector first on the floppy and then later on on the MBR of the ATA hard drive
IMHO Enlightenment still rocks even today!
Regardless of the reasons of the programmers of Gnome to go that route of in_configurability decades ago, they have many many people like that desktop environment.
Ironic but both the rigid in_configurability of Gnome and the configurability to the pixel of KDE is needed for the planet.
For similar reasons many Legacy Window Managers not only still exist, but are actively maintained, so that they can compile in current POSIX operating systems
I, for example can't understand why people need to use Apple Hardware, which is inferior, in an Apple ecosystem which dominates every move you make, but obviously millions of people in the States who need it exist, otherwise they wouldn't buy a phone that's produced for $10 for $2,000 right?
Greetings Programs! We're back at it tonight working on @pidgin 3 Experimental 3! Doing some UI stuff tonight and who knows what else. Check it out!
@deobald This is great news and something we've been slacking on with @Pidgin but is still very much on the radar. That said, we're very excited to see #GTK #a11y available on Windows finally which has been a gripe our users have had for quite some time. Now I just need to spend a lot of time figuring out everything I need to do to get this done right ;)
