In July we continued working to make the EC aware of the gatekeepers “excuses” to avoid compliance with the #DMA and we are gathering your feedback about the #CRA.

We have also developed a #FreeSoftware tool to help us reaching out to representatives in Parliaments across Europe. And more: SFP, FOSDEM...

Well, a week ago, I was somewhat surprised to discover that Debian 12 does not recognize my exotic WLAN card. This frustrated me briefly because I needed it, but I still wanted to wait for the official release of Debian 13 and then see if the card would be recognized and could be used with the improved hardware support of the more recent kernel.

Last night, I messed up my system a bit through some drunken tinkering and was faced with a decision: Debian 12 for a few more days or Trixie already? I'm someone who always goes the official route, at least for the main system. But I thought to myself: whatever, just do it.

And what can I say? The jump from 12 to 13 is almost epoch-making! It's a completely different way of working; everything finally works out of the box, every piece of hardware, every peripheral, simply everything. The latest Gnome, almost the latest KDE, a usable kernel – Debian has finally managed to deliver a competitive Linux out of the box, where basically no tinkering is necessary anymore.
I'm so glad I didn't wait those few extra days. Now Debian has completely won me back!

Another reason to use the GPL software license, over MIT or BSD

In short, GPL uses copyright law to protect you, as an author of software, from exploitation better than MIT or BSD software licenses do. Here we have a case of the Anthropic corporation using MIT-licensed code in one of their software products, which is of course a for-profit product. The original author of that code received no compensation, as it is not required by the license. So the author applied for a job at Anthropic, and ironically, Anthropic responded with an AI-generated rejection letter. Corporations like Anthropic seem to have an allergy to GPL-licensed code however, due to the nature of how the GPL license grants much more specific rights and restrictions, both to the authors of the code, and the companies who use it.

Of course, nowadays LLMs can ingest GPL and MIT/BSD licensed code and spit it back out in altered form, essentially letting the makers of the LLM profit from your work without compensating you, so the GPL is probably due for an “upgrade” to prevent use for AI training. Unfortunately thanks to regulatory capture, and not-so-impartial courts of law mostly ignoring copyright law nowadays, it might not even be possible to use GPL or copyright to protect authors of software anymore. Probably a whole new legal framework is required first, and I don’t think this will be happening any time soon.

I always find it quite something that people who advocate for #privacy, #security, #linux, #freesoftware sometimes get smeared and trolled for no reason… Who knows what the reasons for those sh*tshows are…
Since 2020, some very nasty and toxic behaviors have been materializing and crystallizing from certain communities online. I don't think these are proper developments. The slow degradation of even basic netiquette guidelines is a big issue #imho
