Heads up #Sharkey #admins when #upgrading...
If you have a lot of
#data in your #instance #database, running pnpm run migrate might fail because one or more of the ALTER TABLE... statements might actually timeout on your #PostgreSQL server!

To fix this, attach yourself to your
sharkey database and enter the following...

ALTER DATABASE sharkey SET statement_timeout = '10min';
ALTER ROLE sharkey SET statement_timeout = '10min';
...and try the pnpm run migrate command again.

Question to #mastodon instance coders and #admins

Do you care if we manually reduce the size of a shitty image eg:
from 9MB to 250KB to save you storage space (and thus "donate" to the cost).
That's an ~X 36 decrease in storage.

Or does the system minimise the image storage automagically?

Fediverse Statistik

Dear community,
my friend is thinking about joining Mastodon and/or the fediverse. Specifically, she is looking for the #spanish speaking #archeology community!
As we all know it is notoriously difficult to find a server that matches our preferences (language, region, interests, moderation policies...)
Aggregators like www.joinmastodon.org or #fedigarden rely on server #admins to register their instances (*cough I would not have found fedihum there)
edit: thank you! You helped a lot!

Hi #Admins 👋,

Can you give me quotes that explain your fight against #KIScraping? I'm looking for (verbal) images, metaphors, comparisons, etc. that explain to non-techies what's going on. (efforts, goals, resources...)

I intend to publish your quotes in a text on @campact 's blog¹ (DE, German NGO).

The quotes should make your work🙏 visible in a generally understandable way.

Many of you might be unaware that Mastodon has zero proactive moderation tools, and only prods #admins to respond to annoyances after they happen. Seen a spam 1000 times? Doesn’t matter! You’re going to see it 1,001 because you can’t block it in advance! Want to ignore Fediverse Chick? Too bad! Heaven forbid we match regexps in posts or usernames. Or have built in shared blocklists. Or, well… anything.

That’s how we end up with bizarro stuff like github.com/freeradical-dot-zon. We’re on our own.

@jupiter_rowland OFC this is also due to the fact that the last 50+ years no serious attempt at teaching #TechLiteracy has been done anywhere in a formal matter.

Luckily #Education and #Knowledge isn't monopolized and Initiatives like @cryptoparty / #CryptoParty exist that basically get #TechIlliterates to a level that if they follow up what has been trained don't act as "#UnofficialEmployees" of #NSAbook et. al.

Either way, we'll all have to take part in making the world better, even if that meremy means not contribute to #Enshittification...

OFC that is a constant struggle.

  • Needless to say all #Fediverse Software like #Mastodon actually tells people: 'Hey, #DMs are not private nor encrypted beyond #SSL - #Admins can read them if they actually want to!'

Did Mastodon World have some sort of hiccup today? I got like a gazillion notifications that people followed me today. Some I am sure already were. And I don;t recall how many were following this morning, but I don't think its much different.

For the love of god if you're trying to convince your employer or an organization to "come over" to the #Fediverse, do NOT under any circumstances suggest that they set up a #Mastodon #instance!

Mastodon is the ONLY Fediverse platform that ...
by default ... forces #server #admins to #cache, #copy, and #proxy all #media that passes through its server. This means that not only are server admins paying to host the media their users #upload, but they have to pay to host the media everyone else on the fucking fediverse uploads as well.

Other platforms offer this feature, but
Mastodon is the only one that has this turned on by default.

This results in Mastodon server admins having to shell out thousands of dollars each month in
#S3 hosting costs for no reason whatsoever.

There are much better alternative instance platforms than Mastodon.

@rysiek What they said - #Mastodon isn’t like #Twitter ( #X ) it’d be enormously helpful to “toss a coin to “the Witcher” If it helps to think of the #server #admins as Geralt well...what ever works, cause THEY are what keeps this working & they’re doing an amazing job. They keep the gears running & the monsters at bay. Make sure it’s your server #instance that you tip & not just Mastodon or you could do both if you want to. 🥰 #Fediverse #support #moderators

Wow, we're still not over @fediforum

It's truly amazing to bring some of the most exciting developments on the Fediverse together for a few days and see what everyone is up to. No other network has such a vibrant, committed, and supportive community.

If you attended (or even if you didn't) and you want to know a little more about what we're doing and about Patchwork - please get in touch!

Patchwork will help server admins keep their community safe by keeping it real.

With a string of unique and customisable filters, sign-up challenges, and federation settings there are more ways to ensure that the posts washing up on your servers shores don't break the rules.

If you want to try it, let us know!

With #FediForum coming up next week, we thought we'd give you a little more info on our new service for server admins - Patchwork.

Patchwork servers won't just benefit the admins who run them, but also the people who use them. For example, admins can choose to add complex post types to their server, including:

- Long Posts
- Post Scheduling
- Rich text
- Local Only Posts

We're happy to chat to server admins about what Patchwork can do!

Question for #FediAdmins/#MastoAdmins, how do you go about managing your domain block lists?

Do you use any tools or shared domain block lists? Do you just follow the FediBlock hashtag and manage them manually?
