Capitalists are not ok. What a sad, lost human being.

"On Monday, the co-founder of Business Insider Henry Blodget published a blog on his new Substack about a “native-AI newsroom.” Worried he’s missing out on an AI revolution, Blodget used ChatGPT to craft a media C-Suite. Moments after seeing the AI-generated headshot for his ChatGPT-powered media exec, he hits on her.

“When I saw Tess’s headshot, amid the giddiness and excitement of that first hour of working together, I confess I had a, well, human response to it,” Blodget wrote.

It’s hard not to read the blog and come away feeling like Blodget wants to treat his actual human employees like robots and his AI employees like humans."

Lyrids meteor shower: post-peak report from the Sacramento mountains of southern New Mexico.

I set up two cameras on tripods with wide angle lenses, set the intervalometers to take 30-second exposures...went to bed...cameras kept going until almost 3AM before the batteries exhausted. Almost a thousand images.

I only captured a few Lyrids. Most were close to the shower radiant, which means they were short meteors...didn't cover much sky.

Please note the alt-text on the images. The first two images are of a non-Lyrid meteor that was interesting.

Friends don't let friends use iris, those flowers are not innocuous:
"Many people using iris will be unaware that it was first published in work by R A Fisher, a eugenicist with vile and harmful views on race. In fact, the iris dataset was originally published in the Annals of Eugenics. It is clear to me that knowingly using work that was itself used in pursuit of racist ideals is totally unacceptable."

Megan Stodel · Stop using irisThe iris dataset is very widely used in the data science community, whether as a training aid, a tool for trying out new skills, or just a well-known set of numbers that can be used as background while demonstrating something in a blog.

When we say that tech can only ever be as "good" as the social/political world into which it is introduced, this is wtf we are talking about:

"Medication records from pharmacy chains, lab testing and genomics data from patients treated by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Indian Health Service, claims from private insurers and data from smartwatches and fitness trackers will all be linked together...

"What we're proposing is a transformative real- world data initiative, which aims to provide a robust and secure computational data platform for chronic disease and autism research," [NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya] said."

💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 🔍🌿 Laser light technology called LiDAR is transforming Maya #archaeology by creating 3D maps of ancient cities hidden beneath jungle canopy. Where archaeologists once hacked through wilderness on foot, now remote sensors capture detailed data showing extensive urban networks.

The 2016 PACUNAM survey alone mapped over 2,000 square kilometers and identified more than 60,000 structures, dramatically expanding our understanding of Maya civilization's scale and complexity.

Trump’s halting of data collection could have effects that last far beyond his time in office. The country is losing data on drug use, maternal mortality, climate change…

Even if a future administration seeks to resurrect some of the curtailed efforts, the 2025-29 hiatus will make trends harder to identify and understand.
