In a #UX meeting a one woman has said “delightful” 6 times. I am defiantly not the touchy feely UX panacea guy. Does the thing work and is it easiest way we can achieve it. Then let’s worry about animations and if they are appropriate.

It’s pretty telling that in this HackerNews discussion of Jack’s new _Bitchat_ (proof-of-concept vibe-coded bluetooth p2p meshy messaging app), the chat was having a very tough time thinking outside their box of privileges for use cases. Maybe at concerts or sports, they said, or on airplanes? Too small a market.

Hello?

Disaster zones, behind enemy lines, circumventing censorship and surveillance, and the truly unthinkable: internet down.

Apple: "You can share notes!"

Us: <sets up a joint shopping list>
Me: <edits shopping list>
Notes: "Your husband has just edited the note!"

Later...
Me: <does nothing, hasn't opened list in 3 days>
Notes, to my husband: "Preston has edited the note!"
a short while later
Notes, to my husband: "Preston has edited the note!"
a short while later
Notes, to my husband: "Preston has edited the note!"

#UX for notifications started poorly and continued to decline. Every time we hit rock bottom, companies find new and inventive ways to keep digging.

Re: The upgrade

The main problem is the UX degraded when using mobile browser, AWI mode, and importantly, reading in Landscape mode.

Previously, in Landscape mode, the buttonbar would be on the right, and you could pinch-zoom and make it disappear to the right. This was good. More reading space, and can avoid accidental clicks.

Now, it is stuck at the bottom, and pinch-zoom to hide it just makes the UX even worse.

Maybe AWI mode is being ignored on mobile?

Maybe nobody uses Landscape mode?

Such is life in Alpha code land.

Restaurant / café websites has to have easily accessible:
1) Opening hours
2) Menu that one can search through, including alergens and diet preferences
3) Address
4) Contact that is anything but contact form

Everything else is optional. Sadly most websites fail on this today. And it's never the business owner's fault.

Dear #UX designers, if your web app opens composer windows (looking at you GitHub issue creation dialog), please consider updating the page `<title>`. Those of us hunting across many browser tabs will thank you.

Did a bit of User Experience testing on some #Mastodon #Fediverse printable materials. (thanks to @davidrevoy for the beautiful images)

So far, it's a 100% fail.

Users can not be linked from printable materials to an installable App which they can sign up to a local instance. i.e. If you run an instance and want to hand out invites at the farmers market, no one will be able to easily navigate the app store, the sign up process. There is context breakage.

Spent a bunch of time today user-testing with people in a government org for their design of a website that some people are required to use - there's a section to put a 13 character numerical string, which is usually expressed as sequences separated by hyphens (which don't count to the total number of characters).

They aren't storing it with the hyphens.

Their form has a hard limit of 13 characters.

See where this goes? You can't paste the string in, because you hit the character limit. #UX

The Lotus Ring, is a “wearable, waterproof ring that controls objects at home by pointing.

"No app.
No rewiring.
No WiFi.

"1 Put on the ring. No need for speakers in every room.
2 Snap on the switch cover. Magnets eliminate rewiring.
3 Point & click. Infrared eliminates apps, smartphone, internet.
