#Serbian farmers join #striking university #students’ 24-hour traffic #blockade in #Belgrade

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — "Serbia’s striking university students on Monday launched a 24-hour blockade of a key traffic intersection in the capital, Belgrade, stepping up pressure on the populist authorities over a deadly canopy collapse in November that killed 15 people.

"Serbian farmers on tractors and thousands of citizens joined the blockade that followed weeks of protests demanding accountability of the deadly accident in the northern city of Novi Sad that critics have blamed on rampant government corruption.

"A campaign of street demonstrations has posed the biggest challenge in years to the populist government’s firm grip on power in Serbia.

"Serbia’s President #AleksandarVucic, at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic, later on Monday urged dialogue with the students, saying that “we need to lower the tensions and start talking to each other.”

"Students in the past have refused to meet with #Vucic, saying the president is not entitled by the constitution to hold talks with them.

"'Any kind of a crisis poses a serious problem for our economy,' said Vucic. 'Such a situation in society is not good for anyone.'"

"Ever notice it's always, "these #workers #striking will hurt the #economy," not, "these #corporations (which are making record #profits) are hurting the economy by #exploiting and #abusing their workers until the workers refuse to take it anymore."

It's always, "giving raises and benefits and time off to workers will cause inflation," not "#CEOs and top execs getting millions in yearly raises and bonuses, and large corporations #price-gouging to line #shareholder pockets is causing inflation."

The #Streaming Services are right. The internet has changed the industry and the way #Actors and #Writers get paid should also change. Instead of #Striking, Hollywood Actors and Writers should START. THEIR. OWN. STREAMING. SERVICE. and use a full profit sharing model. If writers want to use AI, let them, and then *pay* them. If they want to put #SuzanneSarandon's head on #BobOdenkirk's body, let them, and then *pay* them. I would sign up to such a service as my first choice for content.

For reasons*, I can't delete all of my #AMPTP #streaming accounts, but I've closed and deleted what I can, and have deleted the #apps from my #tv and #phone (none on my laptop) for the others.

I understand the #unions #striking haven't asked for any such actions, but I do know every #streamer will notice both account and #app deletions.

It's not much, but it is something.

I've been a #Netflix customer since the late 1990's when they were just a #DVD-by-mail service.

I just submitted my #cancellation in support of #striking #writers and #actors, effective the 17th.

In my reason for canceling, I ask them to pay writers and actors fairly, and that #AI is not the path forward for any #creative #industry.

It's not much, and is surprisingly painful, but it's one thing I can do.
