Have been moving away from Google. Gone for Proton for mail, calendar, and drive. Also replacing apps with Fossify.
Still running Android so still not fully severed the link but moving in the right direction.

The last segment of my working life was doing technical writing for software companies in #SiliconValley. Understanding the software was easy, I had been a programmer for a long time before becoming a #techWriter.
The hard part was trying to put things into terms my audience would 'get' and I really admire people who can do that.
That’s why I devour everything @Daojoan sends out.
She got me to #Vivaldi and #Joplin and helped me see that privacy and software freedom is more than #LibreOffice and #ProtonMail.
Go read her stuff. You won’t be disappointed.
Well looks like #Porkbun can’t be recommended anymore if they’re partnering with #protonmail

@threemaapp „Der Bundesrat plant eine Revision des Überwachungsgesetzes. Für die bekannten Schweizer Dienste Threema und Protonmail könnte dies weitreichende Folgen haben. Kritiker wittern einen Trick des EJPD.“
Just a trick? That's a totally strategic attempt to undermine our privacy.

Vigilantes going apoplectic about the risks of #signal or #bluesky or #protonmail or (insert here some mildly succesful alternative to bigtech oligarchy) versus their own obscure and work-in-progress preferences are in a first reading rather annoying: Surely anything is better that the dystopic status-quo?
But on a second reading they are society's only guardrail against slowly drifting back to the black hole. People who are willing to do the thankless monitoring, while others swipe screens.
How do people feel about #ProtonMail? I would like to get off gmail, mostly as a matter of principle, and the basic plan is $5/month *Canadian*, which is pretty cheap, but I'm curious what other people's experience has been. Specifically, have you had any trouble with their "bridge" app to using your own email client (NB: I'm on #Betterbird).
We are not aware of other FOSS development teams that have as extensive knowledge, both theoretical and practical, about #email and #openpgp and regularly release across all platforms for users world wide ... except for #protonmail with whose technical and security experts we discuss regularly. They are the other major game in town doing pervasive email encryption after all. Did you know that Proton's and delta's VCards are compatible across ecosystems and establish immediate encryption?

J'y comprends vraiment rien :(
Does anyone have a good summary of the current state of the #ProtonMail controversy, and/or where it is on the ethics of using the service based on things that have been said?
Proton is leaving because Proton cannot control the flow of information here on the Fediverse.
Most corporations mimic social algorithms to their advantage, particularly, to suppress news and information that may not paint them in a good light. Proton cannot do that on the Fediverse.
When Proton rebranded a few years ago, which caused some people to lose their accounts with no refund, they silenced any complaints on both Facebook and Reddit. I know, because I was one of those people. Most of you were happy to have the new upgraded accounts, but if you had the original family plan, which they discontinued (only to start selling a new family plan months later), you were not a happy person to find out you lost your service.
Additionally, it has been brought to people's attention that Proton now falls under Us-jurisdiction. Proton would like to argue that is only for Proton Wallet, but our legal system does not allow a company to pick and choose. Plus, even if they could (you cannot), it means they could still be pressured and influence by US Politics and US Laws now. This was another little fact, Proton wanted to suppress, but cannot because the Fediverse is organic, and not centralized.

@bluegreenandfree @fuersi Yes, fully agree regarding recent #Protonmail #proton news #Joplin might be a good option, it looks like it has cloud collaboration between users, and is one the most recommended open-source alternatives.
Canceling my subscription with #Proton and could use some advice on alternatives. I looked at #Startmail and #Tuta but I've been using Proton for #CloudStorage, #Calendar, and #Aliases.
The Proton cowards are now trying to say that the Trumpublican party is not the best choice and people are at the hands of Big Tech unless they use Proton. They thought they'd hide this from Mastodon users?

Taking my "avoided #ProtonMail by procrastinating" victory lap.
Dear @protonprivacy
I wanted to reach out and share my thoughts on your decision to leave Mastodon. As a user who values privacy and decentralization, I believe your presence on this platform is crucial.
Mastodon is not just a social media platform; it’s a community that shares your commitment to privacy. By staying, you can continue to lead the conversation around secure communication and inspire others to prioritize their online privacy.
Let’s keep building a safer digital world together! Please reconsider your decision.
Say what you will about #protonmail, they've certainly improved my awareness of what some tattoos indicate.
A lengthy and rather interesting discussion from yesterday about Proton Mail and Mastodon https://discuss.techlore.tech/t/proton-removed-mastodon-from-their-homepage/12629 #Mastodon #ProtonMail
It's been a relatively busy day at work so far for me today, so I've not been actively looking at Mastodon and seems I've missed some stuff along the way.
@beardedtechguy just informed me that @protonprivacy is leaving Mastodon, which I now see by what they have in their bio and I'm curious as to why this is happening.
Not only that, but how are people feeling about this that actually use Proton?
Are y'all moving to another paid email service and if so, where are you going?
Are you sticking with Proton?
