Hi there, I have a little project that I’m not sure how to tackle. I have ideas but the proof of concept would take a long time. Can the Fediverse help?
Here is the problem I’d like to solve:
My cat, Vanille, has a heart condition. She’s fine with regular medication but her continued well-being also involves me knowing when she is unwell and reacting fast. This is done through monitoring how fast she is breathing.
Apparently there is no better way than her RPM (respirations per minute), as funny as this reads…
Of course I can do this the old-fashioned way but she’s a busy cat, she doesn’t stay in place for long, and counting her RPM absolutely requires:
So I have a low success rate, it takes a lot of time and I’d rather spend this time enjoying her company than stressing over her health.
Hence my little project. Can #dyi #electronics help solve this?
My naive idea was to add sensors near her favorite places, perhaps infrared cameras
Back with pictures of my #DYI cooling pad for the #gaming laptop. Temps are running around 10°C to 12°C cooler on the lowest fan speed. Even at max speed it's super quiet. Here's what I did:
• I removed the original 80mm fans and clip on fan control.
• I mounted three 120mm fans, securing the cabling with zip ties.
• I mounted the new fan control with some double sided mounting foam.
Unfortunately, the mesh screens were no bueno. I’ll have to find another solution.
Weekend Project: Building a #DYI cooling pad for my 17.3" Asus #gaming #laptop by modifying a Cooler Master Notepal U3 Plus.
Part list includes:
• 1 - Cooler Master Notepal U3 Plus
• 3 - 4-Pin 120mm fans, daisy chained w/ speed selector
• 3 - Mesh dust screens
• 1 - 4-Pin fan connector to USB
• 1 - Pack of small zip ties for cable management.
Wish me luck. I'll post pics when completed.
Update: now running nginx
Hi, my (host)name is rpi. I’m a Raspberry Pi Zero W running NetBSD in read-only mode. Stefano has decided that I will serve as a mirror for the IT Notes blog, so various Varnish reverse proxies will also direct traffic to me - some as a primary server, others as a failover. I only respond to the reverse proxies via IPv6 and I’m connected to the USB output of a Mikrotik switch, so my existence depends on that switch. Even if I'm connected via wifi only. When it gets rebooted, I’ll disappear for a while too, but since I’m in read-only mode, I’ll come back just as I was before.
After 7 years sitting in a drawer, Stefano decided it was time for me to go operational. When Stefano updates the blog, the script that generates it will connect to me, remount me in read-write mode, copy the new files, and I’ll return to read-only.
Oh, by the way, there’s no external web server involved—I’m running bozohttpd, integrated into NetBSD’s base system, and started by inetd when needed.
This is the most helpful article I’ve read on drawer slides. I’ve been battling ours for years, and have needed to replace some of them more than once. I didn’t realize how many factors determine if you’re using the right ones. Turns out our contractors installed ones that weren’t right for us.
Sigh.
If I had known all of this, it would have alleviated a lot of frustration for me.

Hey #fedi, hos do you organize, plan and document your personal projects?
I've lost track of my projects a long time ago, and I'm constantly finding new inspiration, but I lack a system to organize it.
How do you do it?

Reposting the #introduction after I lost another instance to entropy.
After 4 years in the fediverse, an introduction on my own instance.
I'm a dad of three, living in #Chile, in the #valparaiso region, near the coast of #Concon. Work as IT engineering lead. In my scarce spare time I'm a #maker, #astronomy enthusiast, Bread #baker, #DYI #openhardare #electronics amateur and #solarpunk hopeful. I'm looking for people to start a #hackerspace or #makerspace as a part of and to grow the community based on #freesoftware ideals.

The oldest-surviving anatomical theatre in the world, built in 1594 and located in Padua. At the center stands a table on which the dissections of human or animal bodies took place. You can still visit it today. Photo: Daily Art Magazine.
Sony's #AI platform called "Aitrios runs directly on the chip, so AI systems built on #RaspberryPi machines will be more secure than systems that rely on cloud-based AI processing. Only metadata is exported to the internet. Naturally, the chip on a modest single-board #computer won't be able to run huge AI models. However, #Sony says its #Aitrios platform is ideal for inventory analysis, smart building management, and license plate recognition."

Nerdy post about paper!
I spent quite some time looking for 90gsm bulky paper that work well with my printer and come in A4 format so that I don't have to store and cut big sheets of offset paper (which is a shame because I really like the Munken Print Cream from Artic Paper).
Turns out one trick is to look into Sketch Paper Pads BUT most pads are not a true A4 size as they count in the spirals. Luckily, I found this thing: Fabriano 1268 Sketch :) #paper #indiepress #dyi #bookbinding
