Achievement unlocked! Emailed the offices of the #BCNDP #BCCP #BCGreens and every elected MLA. A similar message as last week's to Municipal leaders/staff.

Tweaked the message to emphasize the "BC Made" element in this time of a trade war with the USA.

Bluesky isn't it.

It's a time when people are going to look for locally grown solutions. That includes Social Media!

#Mastodon and the #Fediverse are the *only* places with Canadian options!

Sigh.

The protest candidate won…. By a handful of votes.
Less than 600 votes won the election.
Turnout was under 10%.
So many problems in the world, but cynicism, apathy and disengagement have to be right up there!

Alberni Valley News · Tom Verbrugge elected in 2024 Port Alberni by-electionBy Elena Rardon

A former Mayor, current Councillor, and a really really good, caring, person who I feel grateful to have known and seen as a mentor, passed away suddenly today.

RIP John.

Very sad about it. Too young. He was a paramedic by trade, but spent many of the past years helping the most vulnerable people in #PortAlberni while also on Council.

Sigh. 😢

Alberni Valley News · Port Alberni councillor John Douglas diesBy Alberni Valley News Staff

This is so sad. Helen was a character. A riot. A good person and politician. She was kind, and funny, and not a little odd, and always surprising.

I have never met anyone like her and I can't imagine I ever will again. My only regret is that we had to compete for a spot on City Council and didn't get the chance to work together.

I kept an amazing bottle of Tequila that she bought me for my birthday. I guess that becomes my personal memento from her. That and lots of memories and the impact she had on our City as councillor. Her house in #PortAlberni is only a few blocks away from me.

I guess the only consolation is she likely died doing what was her passion, seeing the world and the finer side of life, and driving unique cars.

RIP Helen.
One of a Kind.

Your Friend,
Chris

Alberni Valley News · Former Port Alberni city councillor dies after car crash overseasBy Susie Quinn

Proud of my little city and its Council today.
“Port Alberni councillor Dustin Dame signed an open letter to the Canadian government earlier this year calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Dame, who was acting as mayor on Dec. 11, spoke in favour of the motion. “This is one of those situations where our voice feels small, but we have a voice nonetheless,” he said.

Councillor Debbie Haggard, who was moved to tears by the presentation, said the situation in Gaza is a “complicated issue” and also voted to support the motion.

Councillor Todd Patola, however, didn’t mince words in calling the situation a genocide.

“I stand for pacifism, and I stand against genocide,” he said before supporting the motion.”

Alberni Valley News · Port Alberni joins growing list of cities calling for ceasefire in GazaBy Elena Rardon

I was just reminded that the Province of British Columbia's latest (2018) guidelines to Cities for building in areas impacted by sea level rise are literally "underwater" by 2200. They plan for 1.0m rise by 2100 and 2.0 by 2200 but as you can see in their chart, the median for 2200 is closer to 2.3m. Do we need to talk about "systemic optimism/delusion”?
