Thank you both, you made me buy Karen Hao's 'Empire of AI' .

From a NY Times review:
The “paper clip problem” is a well‑known ethics thought experiment in the world of artificial intelligence where the ' harmless' goal of making paperclips ends up using all of Earth's resources.

Karen Hao argues that the pursuit of an artificial superintelligence has become its own figurative paper clip factory.

This article tracks with my thinking about #OpenAI in general. The way OpenAI is structured, the people it hires, and the Silicon Valley and VC culture it swims in, will make it impossible for them to do anything else but jump on the road to insidious #enshittification. Advertising and marketing has ruined every single media in the past: Newspapers, Radio, TV and in recent decades, the Internet.

Be wary of anybody talking about “dominance”, “control” and “winning” for their thing.

“OpenAI is laying the groundwork to monetize one of the largest and fastest-growing web properties in the world, and it all begins with the router.”

The prompt template for GPT-OSS was updated recently, and apparently it noticeably boosted the quality for many people. You might want to redownload and try again if you weren't happy with the quality (not refusal.) #LLM #ML #AI #OpenAI

Is it bad that #AI providers scrape your content, #blog, source code, etc. to train their #AI models?
If yes, why? Because they make money?

Did you also block the #Google search crawler before the AI hype? If no, why not? Google Search is also making money from your content, your blog posts, your source code, and even more. So why not block the Google search crawler from accessing your website as well?

It makes no sense to me to block only AI providers from accessing my website.

It seems apparent to me that the #OpenAI developers are trying to use upfront RAG systems to create "guardrails" against unwise use...which is akin to using a sieve to stop water flowing through a coffee filter.

Its not going to work.

Turns out stochastic parrots aren't useful at anything that needs...accuracy.

So far, the only use cases I've seen that are possibly useful for #genAI are:

- non-critical translation
- non-critical writing
- creating a front end to a proprietary knowledge base (Thomson Reuters and Toyota are leading in this area)

Notice I left coding off the list. That was on purpose.

#ElonMusk has accused Apple of engaging in antitrust violations by allegedly making it impossible for any #ArtificialIntelligence company other than #OpenAI to reach the No. 1 spot in its App Store rankings, calling it an "unequivocal antitrust violation."

LLMs will never be what they're currently advertised as. They are not answer machines. They are not search engines. They do not think. They do not provide data.

All they do is generate text via statistical weights. They do not generate thoughts, or information. Just characters in sequence. They cannot be stopped from "hallucinating." Because they do not "hallucinate." They just generate text. Whether that text reflects reality or not is only ever due to coincidence.

These companies won't tell you this, because they want your money. So they lie, which primes you to accept more BS from the automated BS machine.

Every story where someone is driven mad by ChatGPT begins with lies about the technology, what it is, and what it does—lies that originate from OpenAI itself.

The very framing of "having a conversation with a computer" is artificial, deceitful, and constructed by the company in order to turn statistical text generation into a consumer-facing product. Deceit lies at the core of what OpenAI does with this technology. The people being "fooled" by ChatGPT are first fooled by OpenAI. People are being actively coached—by real, live human beings—into being easily manipulated by this software.
