A young and absolutely handsome gray tabby cat sits on an olive green couch, basking in the sun. He has one front paw extended and one curled under, and his eyes are closed in contentment. Beside him is an open book of cello sheet music for the score of the “Lord of the Rings” films: on the left page is “In Dreams” and on the right is “Concerning Hobbits.” Contrasts of sunlight and shadow give the scene a striking yet peaceful effect.

Towering beech trees, evenly spaced on grassy fields, line both sides of a wide pedestrian road that recedes from the foreground into the distance. The trees rise to the top of the image, their branches meeting in the middle, reminiscent of a vaulted cathedral ceiling. Sunlight illuminates the canopy of leaves, which casts dappled shadows on the ground. The pedestrian road (no cars are allowed on the island) is divided into lighter and darker strips; on the lighter strip on the right, a tiny human figure walks away from camera, while further off on the darker strip is a bicycle surrey, pedaled by two riders sitting side by side. Some lampposts line the left side of the road, dwarfed by the trees. Low-rise red brick buildings can be seen in the distance through the tree trunks. Above, beyond the green mass of sunlit leaves, is a glimpse of blue sky.

In the evening here at 42.2 latitude and on the very Western edge of the Eastern Time Zone, the light streams through one small window set over our staircase and illuminates a vase filled with last year's hydrangeas that I dried. The effect is of light and shadow. (photo attached)

Light streams through one small window set over our staircase and illuminates a vase filled with dried hydrangeas. The vase was handmade by me; the top half is glazed black and the bottom half is glazed turquoise, with tape resist giving a coppery striped look. You can see the shape of the window as it illuminates part of the vase, most of the flowers, and the back wall. All else is in dark shadow.

Something a little different for #Doorsday. Over 2 years ago, I took this photo with my phone while lying down sick with Covid in the spare room. I normally kept the door shut to isolate, but whenever it was open Max would sit in the doorway to check in on me. (He seemed to know to keep his distance!) How I miss my friend.

Standing at the top of a path leading into an office building at night, you can see how the harsh illumination of a streetlight creates intriguing shadows . The sidewalk has a hatched pattern of black shadows on the light gray cement. At the right, an elevated bed of grasses looks like streaks of russet brown. The foot of the parh stops at the building entrance stairs, which are glowing red under an off-screen neon light. The building atrium glass walls show an empty out of focus area lit up in pink.

A dense forest in the Fichtelgebirge, where sunlight breaks through tall conifer trunks and touches the lush green undergrowth and mossy ground. A fallen tree lies in the foreground, partly lit, partly in shadow. The atmosphere is calm and almost magical – pure, untouched nature.
