Our tent in a winter storm. High winds are especially dangerous during winter hikes, as they efficiently remove body heat, which can lead to frostbite or even hypothermia. They can also affect visibility, making navigation and movement difficult. If the winds get too strong, pitching a tent might become impossible, so it's important to be aware of the situation.

Halfway through summer sunset, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. August 4, 2019, 8:22 PM.

In the deepening twilight of post sunset, we are standing beside a large lake, looking over a tangled thicket of leafy plants and wildflowers. Both this shore and the wooded far shore are mostly silhouetted in the fading light. Beneath a pale blue gray sky, the lingering gold and orange of the sunset tint the horizon and are mirrored on the slightly rippled water below.

A blue gray evening sky with a few slowly dissolving fair weather cloud clusters. We are on the shore of a large lake, whose completely placid surface is unruffled by the slightest breeze, mirroring the sky perfectly. We are standing on an outcrop of rough gray rock with scrubby green leafy plants growing in some cracks. There are more rock outcrops along the far shore.
