Feels damn good to be using #Heroku again. I don't give a good god damn if fly or render are cheaper. Heroku is just damn easy. #Chrysalis

DISCLAIMER: I'm super-biased. I worked there for 5 years. It was the best job of my career (while also true that the job was hard on me because #actuallyaudhd and had no idea—but then so has every "job" in my life). And I still have CRM stock from it (though the latter causes me 🙄 at times).

That "webinar" a few minutes ago about today's massive #salesforce / #heroku outage was pretty embarassing. I learned a few things:

1. the outage was caused because they run unattended-upgrades on some critical subset of their servers (based on the details of the outage, I'm thinking NAT boxes) and don't test/pin system packages???

2. the people hosting the webinar spend way too much time reading their slides

3. they didn't know that the heroku statuspage is down and returning 500's until I asked about it in the Q&A

really just... a whole thing...

Wow. I and a colleague just spent waaaay too many hours debugging a Rails/Heroku/Redis connection issue...

...which came down to an initializer file being in the wrong folder. :blobfoxfacepalm:

(and it's nice to have work to keep me distracted from the upcoming sh*tstorm)

What alternative to Heroku are you using to deploy your Python projects? (Please boost for reach!)

(Same survey as last year, let's see if the results are significantly different)

#python#paas#heroku

If you're not sure what a memory leak looks like… it looks like this. Notice the occasional slow ramp, followed by a constant (sometimes at higher/lower pitch) increase. I suspect this memory leak is particular to a certain kind of traffic. Tomorrow (or maybe Tuesday) I go spelunking. I'll report back what I find.

@elight ohh, I didn't know you use to work at Heroku.

BTW I'm not blaming engineers nor the engineering team at all. Perhaps you can tell if this just because the gigantic bureaucracy at #Salesfoce that enable and made this kind of issue to extend to unacceptable level #Heroku was not used to have - because that's how it looks from the outside.

I just discovered that one of my #Heroku apps that was using the free #Logentries integration… wasn’t anymore. And Logentries doesn’t show up on Heroku’s addons page anymore.

I have a suspicion that the associated Logentries account was connected to an email address of someone not on the project anymore, but an email from Heroic would’ve been nice here, too...

If you have (had?) a free Logentries account connected to a Heroku app, you might want to see if it’s still there!

ugh every time I have to mess with it it becomes super-clear that nobody at #heroku cares at all about their feature to be able to deploy docker containers and nobody has so much as looked at their bug backlog since like 2018... I will be so glad to get this application off of heroku soon...

Loving all the innovative stuff folks are coming up with for #Mastodon and the #fediverse more broadly.

Made quick and dirty "tootages" which displays all the publicly-available images of an instance. It uses #python via #flask and is meant to be deployed on #heroku
