Amitai SchleierThis guy, how do I explain? Adrian Segar<p>I'm a strong proponent of learning with others. Here are two examples from physics and coding of the advantages of cooperative learning.</p><p><a href="https://www.conferencesthatwork.com/index.php/learning/2014/03/cooperative-learning-lessons-from-neutrino-physics-and-pair-programming" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">conferencesthatwork.com/index.</span><span class="invisible">php/learning/2014/03/cooperative-learning-lessons-from-neutrino-physics-and-pair-programming</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/learning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>learning</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CooperativeLearning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CooperativeLearning</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/PairProgramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PairProgramming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/physics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>physics</span></a></p>
toolbear#🌶️<p>A nice, lighter fare (though not without depth) video from Fiq about the hip-hop music his heart feels most at home in:</p><p><a href="https://nebula.tv/videos/signifiedbsides-old-head-tier-list" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nebula.tv/videos/signifiedbsid</span><span class="invisible">es-old-head-tier-list</span></a></p><p>A gem of a life lesson towards the end about how "elders" should be talking with and engaging with the young artists from a collaborative, egalitarian stance (not scolding nor lecturing).</p><p>I see parallels with when I was taught to view pair programming (think science lab partners, but writing code) as something where both sides have something valuable to teach the other. It's easy to fall into a junior-senior mindset, especially when work culture reinforces that.</p><p>I see other lessons for aging software developers in Fiq's video. That insight of his transcends discipline I believe. Good guidance if, like me, you aren't ready to be done, but you do feel a compulsion to do at least a little deliberate baton passing to younger generations.</p><p><a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/HipHop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HipHop</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Mentorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mentorship</span></a> versus <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Collaboration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Collaboration</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/PairProgramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PairProgramming</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Aging" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Aging</span></a></p>
FeralRobots<p>I get that <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/PairProgramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PairProgramming</span></a> ("when done correctly") generally produces more software w/fewer bugs. But it can only be done correctly by people of neurotypes that allowed them to tolerate it. Which means projects are deprived of input from people of diverse neurotypes. It's evident by casual examination of the world that most large-scale creative endeavors benefit from diverse perspectives.</p><p>If your coders are cranking code to a precise spec, the loss isn't as obvious &amp; indeed might not matter.</p>
FeralRobots<p>Looking back on the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/agile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>agile</span></a> method that was then known as "<a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ExtremeProgramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ExtremeProgramming</span></a>" (we called it "XP" at the time, I think folks now call it "X" in retrospect), it seems clear to me that <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/PairProgramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PairProgramming</span></a> was more or less designed to reduce the neurodiversity of development orgs, &amp; as such was likely to result in a poorer-quality product along several dimensions.</p>

David Beers<p>Someone finally did a study based on data from GitHub PRs that measures how it is that teams that do continuous code review (either <a href="https://dair-community.social/tags/pairprogramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pairprogramming</span></a> or <a href="https://dair-community.social/tags/mobprogramming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mobprogramming</span></a>) are somewhat counterintuitively able to perform so much better than those doing asynchronous code reviews (pull requests). Lotsa queuing theory but it boils down to ensemble programmers having zero interruptions &amp; remaining in a flow state. <a href="https://youtu.be/fYFruezJEDs" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/fYFruezJEDs</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>(Also the psychological safety advantage is huge in my XP ☺️)</p>
