Have you ever seen a post or thread that you want to look at again after a certain amount of time?

There is a Fediverse reminder bot which you can use to remind you about a particular thread after a specified time period (it can be minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years later).

To use the bot, reply to the post or thread you want reminding about, mentioning the bot's account with the amount of time you want. More info and instructions in the guide:

BookWyrm is a Fediverse alternative to Amazon Goodreads. BookWyrm has a built-in book catalogue you can choose details from, but if you can't find a particular book you can add it to BookWyrm manually:

This guide also answers some common questions about adding books manually.

If you're unfamiliar with BookWyrm and want to find out more about it, there's a general guide to it at:

I was just asked by some one... what is boost bombing?

Well, it's when a person quite literally spams the stream with boosts.

Some people barely skim the stream and just boost stuff the glanced at... we're talking 10-20 in a row. Whilst it can get annoying, these are individual posts being over enthusiastically shared.

Others for some unknown and inane reason... boost every single comment on their own posts... Have they confused fave and boost buttons perhaps... is it really necessary to boost a post that effectively says 'LOL' or 'I agree'.... Does that also fall under 'tooting your own horn' (boosting yourself over and over again, even unboosting and reboosting the same post at different times or days).

One I can understand... the other is inane and insane to me.

I guess that's why there's an option to mute the boosts of people... it does come in handy.

If you're looking for interesting accounts to follow on here, there are lots of ways you can discover them:

@vicgrinberg
> it's people's right to reply

It is, but they don't have a right to make you read it.

FYI If you Mute Conversation on the post, immediately after posting it, you won't see any replies. I presume this is what the GoToSocial controls @inkorrupt posted by about are doing.

People following your account will only see replies from accounts followed by someone on their server anyway, and not Muted/Block by them or their server admins. Which filters out a lot of garbage.

new release of #Fedialgo, the customizable timeline algorithm / filtering system for your Mastodon feed, counts the number of times each hashtag appears in your timeline even if people don't use a "#" character to give you a better sense of what people are talking about in the Fediverse.

there's a little bit of art vs. science here because some strings are disqualified from this kind of counting (e.g. a word like "the" should not be counted even if some maniac decided to make it a hashtag) so let me know if you see any weirdly high counts.

If you're looking for a nice well-run Fediverse server to move to, you might want to check out my other website:

I also run an account that features good individual servers every day:

If you're only using Mastodon through the official mobile apps, you're missing out on many of its features such as pinned posts, temporary mutes, scheduled posts, different poll types, account redirects and more.

If you want the complete Mastodon experience, you might want to try using your server's website, third party apps, web apps, desktop apps etc.

More info on all the different ways of accessing Mastodon in the guide here:

@mothninja

I'm sure you're probably already there, but here is some info I gave to someone else..... (2 separate messages so apologies for any duplication)....

I've moved 3 times now. Without looking, I think it's...

- sign up to new instance
- download (export) following, blocks & bookmarks from website of current instance (in settings)
- set up forwarding details of new instance on old instance (in settings)
- in new instance, enter details of old instance
- import files
- watch new instance populate

However you'll find better explanations on #FediTips and the like. Will see if I can find my old bookmark and send you that!

----------

Just looking at it now. The bit that always trips me up is that you have to set up the move FROM different account on the new instance before you set up the move TO a different account on the old instance..... I think.

Otherwise it's just....

- set up new account (usually quite easy but with the added step of writing why you want to apply for beige.party)
- go to import and export on current instance and download csv files of whatever you want to keep (something I didn't do previously so had to manually refollow all, which was a pain)
- in account settings configure moving to different account (ie. Stick in your new account deets)
- on new account, in account settings, configure move from different account (and put it old account deets)

....pretty sure it's this way round, but I know before I kept getting it wrong and you have to do one before the other - either from/to or to/from

- on new account go to import and import the csv files you downloaded!
- it's party time

Hey Fedi!
We ARE the algorithm. But that also means it can take a little extra work to get the feed that works for you.

How do YOU 🫵 curate your feed? How do you use lists?

Here's my algorithm:
Someone posts something cool? Follow 'em.
Someone posts something EXTREMELY COOL (or I've seen their cool content before)?
They get added to my ⭐️ Faves list.

Then, in the Advanced Web Interface (Ala Tweetdeck, see 2nd link below), I've got:

1. ⭐️ Faves. 🔘Hide these posts from Home. Also, show me replies IF someone it's a reply to someone else also in my Faves list.

2. 🏠 Home: folk I follow who aren't in ⭐️ Faves

3.👋 # introduction (to welcome, follow, and boost interesting new folk!)

As always, don't sleep on @FediTips 's excellent guides; here's the one on using Lists:

You don't need to use your real name on the Fediverse. It is totally fine to use a nickname or made up name, as long as you're not impersonating someone else.

You also don't need to use a photo if you don't want to. You can put a picture of something else on your profile, or don't have a picture at all. (Many blind users have no image on their profile, for example.)

The only info you need to give when you sign up is an email address, and only your server's admin sees this.

#FediAlgo will now let you filter your feed by the server your timeline toots are originating from. You can also choose whether to color highlight hashtags you've participated in or favourited and some other fun stuff.

In the fediverse, we are all the welcoming committee! If someone you know from elsewhere joins, make sure you interact with them, helping them feel welcome and included.

* Reply to their posts, @mentioning people who might be interested in the topic.

* Boost their best posts to help people find and follow them.

* Subscribe to their feed to get a notification every time they post, so you remember.

* encourage them to post an #introduction, to help fun folks find them.

I just remembered you can follow someone but disable their boosts :cat_wow:

both for new people I follow as well as for ones I already follow, I need to remember that so I can disable them on people who often boost posts that need a CW (or three) but don't :frog_think:

p.s. you can do this for me, too :bugcat_nod: if my boosts aren't to your tastes, it's not just ok but actively good to turn them off :hug_love: (especially since my boost-to-post ratio scales exponentially with both my exhaustion and depression :emolga_sweat: )

If you see an account profile marked "Automated" or "Bot", it doesn't mean anything bad!

The "Automated" label is activated by account owners who want to let people know that they aren't monitoring the replies to their posts, usually because a bot is running it.

Accounts that use this label are "good bots", providing useful services such as weather updates or interactive games. Bad bots simply wouldn't use the label at all.
