Listen to this #Hardfork episode, good review of GPT-4o and Google I/O , with a good conversation about the dramatic impact it could have when Google starts integrating AI into it's search and how that could potentially destroy or at least diminish ad-revenue on the worldwideweb. People underestimate the possible impact and Google is not honest about it.

The New York Times · OpenAI’s Flirty New Assistant, Google Guts the Web and We Play HatGPTBy Kevin Roose

The writing is on the wall.

Actually it's not writing. It's neon letters directly wired to a fusion reactor.

The internet you knew? It's gone. There is no recovering it. There's too much money and incentive behind the idea of making the entire village into a strip mall run by LLMs. Your gardens are forfeit.

I don't know if a
#hardfork is possible, but even if it isn't, we gotta get to work building the intentional, human web. The one that rejects generative content, the one that verifies humanity through mutual trust, the one that takes privacy and safety of our neighbors as the highest value.

There are many tools available, but united effort must join together around them. Carefully, intentionally, we have to start moving what matters away from the polluted land.

@Tim @toolbear#🌶️@ Taylor 🌻🇺🇦🇵🇸✊ In one sense, Rochko has won, namely the firm tie between "Fediverse" and "Mastodon".

My estimation is that about every other Mastodon user thinks that the Fediverse is only Mastodon, at least when it comes to being non-corporate and actually decentralised. And this actually includes people who have escaped from Twitter immediately after Musk had bought it out, i.e. they've been on Mastodon for a year and a half already. So the only two ways to have another free, open-source, non-corporate, non-commercial, decentralised project in the Fediverse seem to be either to fork Mastodon or to develop one from scratch.

Most of the rest is so firmly tied to Mastodon's UI and Mastodon's UX and Mastodon's way of doing just about everything that, even if they knew what else the Fediverse has to offer right now, they couldn't use it because it doesn't look and feel like Mastodon. Even if about 98% of them use Mastodon through a mobile app.

I mean, why else is hard-forking Mastodon such a huge topic, and moving from Mastodon to Akkoma or the Forkeys or (streams) or something else isn't a topic at all?

Tbh I'm not enthusiastic about a #Mastodon #hardfork. Not necessarily because of the #techdebt or even because it's technically inferior to other #ActivityPub implementations (which are both true), but because I cannot be sure if that new fork is going to adopt the same attitude as Mastodon in choking the rest of the #fediverse with its proprietary extensions and #EmbraceExtendExtinguish / #EEE.

I'd rather not have the uncertainty. Either start from scratch like
#GoToSocial is doing or help the other two mainstream AP families which are #Misskey and #Pleroma. That's the only way we can ensure no implementation overwhelmingly dominates the fedi. :seija_coffee:

Hachyderm.ioJenniferplusplus (@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io)If in-place upgrades aren't the goal, then just build something new. Or contribute to one of the various preexisting projects. Don't adopt mastodon's tech debt for no reason. It's not worth it. I know I'm eager to have more help, if existing projects suddenly sound better.

From this week's #HardFork: US vs #google.

@caseynewton mentioned (17:50) that he's looking forward to when "...zero new meaningful search engines are created."

Q 2 Casey: have u tried #Ecosia? It's NFP, dedicating profits to help save Earth. I switched months ago and rarely (if ever) rely on Google & always find what I am looking for.
Remember, "Do no evil"?

it is a great deal of disappointment when we see journalists who - in the past - have done decent reporting work posing as spokespersons for companies. I just listened to the episode of the #HardFork #podcast where @caseynewton and Kevin Roose spend twenty minutes explaining what a federated network would be and marveling at the possibility that a federated network is the success or the future for social media. only they do it talking about #bluesky
